Making my own rifle stock

I am going to start making my own rifle stock for my .22 just for fun. I want to customize it and make it just how I want it. I am just planning on using hand tools to carve it and shape it. Just a fun side project, but this is my first time doing it. Anybody have any suggestions? I've only ever done this before on a BB gun when I was young, so I'm open to any suggestions you might have, any resources, techniques, anything at all. Thanks!

I would love to be of great help... But I would like to tell you good luck. I was also thinking about a project like this. There are companies that sell stock blanks. These would be a good place to start as they were specially picked for being gun stocks.

i did a semi inletted stock on a sporterized springfield, i learned it is hard to put wood back so measure twice and cut sparingly. if starting from scratch i would consider making a laminated blank. A laminated blank would have less chance of a surprise when you start cutting away wood, such as an iron deposit or knot in a critical area. keep us posted on your progress.

If you like to be different to your neighbour; why not depart from the norm. instead of supporting the barrel via the action - support the barrel (with the action supporting itself off the barrel. How? sleeve the barrel by attaching a properly sized tube either steel or aluminium with epoxy or other means forward of the recoil lug/bbl nut to maybe half barrel length or more. Then attach a stock off the tube free floating the action. This does sound a tad out there but it would dampen barrel vibrations and stiffen it considerably. rail type stock with adjustable rests would work well. Drill and tap tube for mounts etc.

the 80% done stock I finished out sure was a lot of work. turned out ok, but man did it take forever.

Find and read Al Linden's books, if you still want to at that point, then go for it!
