Mallards and Teal calling

Geese respond to geese. Never had one turn to a duck call, but usually have a goose call on me during the season along with my duck call even if I'm duck hunting as you get the occasional goose or geese flying around. I find most ducks (notably not tree ducks) will respond to a mallard call, including pintail. Whistles work on 'em along with teal, but teal and pintail will both respond to a mallard, so I just use a mallard call. Lots of folks whistle at teal, but they will readily respond to a mallard call. Pintail can act aloof unless they're low and really wanting to sit down.

A bluewing teal call usually works on teal but little else. I've found that it works well in the early season on them but not so much later. The whistle is the most versatile call and can be used for greenwings (and bluewings), widgeon, pintails, wood ducks, and blackbellies as well as drake mallards.

I had a whistle for a while. It had a hole for a finger to cover and pulling the finger off changed the tone as a pintail will call. You could, of course, teal call with it. I lost it somewhere, but really, I prefer to use my mallard call.
Like I said Ducks respond to Ducks, they make sounds ranging from whistles, cooing, yodels and grunts, but all ducks to include geese & swans will respond to the hen mallards quack, and further more the Hen is the only duck that quacks.............

Gadwalls quack, just not as loud and annoying as hen mallards.
Yes, but it is a lot higher-pitched than a hen Mallards quack, but only the hen quacks !

It's a low, gutteral quack and they don't have the vocabulary that the mallard hen does, but then nothing in the duck world does, really.
Not a lot of mallards where I hunt, salt marsh. There's ONE hole there that's flooded tember where a bayou floods, fresh water, duck weed and suh. I've shot mallard off that hole. Kinda like hunting Stuttgart, Arkansas, but the birds are either there or they're not. Hunt that hole you could get zonked or you could have the best hunt in years. STILL, the mallard call is effective on all species there except for tree ducks. Tree ducks squeal, not like any duck call you've ever heard. They usually fly south before season, but a few years ago they were late migrating. I didn't even waste my breath on 'em after a while.
