Is it just me, or is this article worded to evoke sympathy for the would-be robber who was shot instead of the shop owner who defended himself against a pair of thugs? The Hill District is one of the most dangerous areas of Pittsburgh, PA, for what it's worth.

Store owner wounds man during robbery attempt

Saturday, January 03, 2004

A man was injured last night while trying to rob a convenience store in the Hill District, city police said.

Police said that around 8:30 p.m., two men entered Ann's Market at Webster Avenue and Somers Street, brandished a firearm and demanded money from the store owner.

The owner, who had been robbed before, pulled out a gun and fired five times at the robbers, police said. One of the suspects was hit in the chest and both ran out of the store.

The injured man ran to a house about a block away on Webster Avenue. Medics were called to the scene and the man was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was in critical condition last night. The other assailant fled.

Police said no charges will be filed against the store owner, and charges are pending against the wounded suspect.

I did not get that feeling from that particular story. I do remember a story that ran on a Los Angeles TV news program about a home invasion robbery "gone bad." It went bad, all right -- for the home invader, who was shot and wounded by the homeowner.

Makes you wonder how the media would define "gone right"

Victims are injured, perps are shot.

How about this:

"a man perpetrating armed robbery on a convenience store was justifiably shot and wounded....."
