Police: Gun store clerk shoots robber

March 4, 2009

Waukegan police said a clerk at a guns-and-ammunition store appears to have shot a man who was trying to rob the establishment this afternoon.

Officers responded at about 1:45 p.m. to Mike Schrank's Smoke 'N Gun, 2010 Washington St., to a call of a person shot, according to a police news release.

There they found a man who had been shot twice in the chest and once in the leg, and a shop clerk who had a gun trained on him, the statement said.

Witnesses told investigators that the injured man went behind the counter and argued with the clerk.

The confrontation turned physical and the clerk pulled a handgun and shot the other man, witnesses said. During the struggle, the clerk also shot himself in the hand accidentally.

The man was taken first to Vista West Medical Center in Waukegan, then to Advocated Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was taken into surgery. The clerk was taken another local hospital for treatment, police said.

Police believe the man was trying to rob the store, the statement said.

In October a 20-year-old man who held up a Waukegan grocery with a pellet gun was shot and killed by a clerk who fired at him after the robbery, as he pedaled from the scene on a bicycle. A Lake County grand jury later declined to indict the store clerk in the killing.

I can't wait to hear the details.

I'm trusting this simply is poor reporting. Shooting a man riding a bicycle away from you, carrying a pellet gun or not carrying a pellet gun, is NOT a good shoot here or in IL.

Smoke 'N Gun

Looks like they lived up to their name.

I think with all the attention on how well the gun sales are doing we may get more criminals with this kind of intellect thinking that gun stores are easy targets.

I guess they'll learn the hard way! :banghead:

some idiot a long time ago tried to rob a gun shop in the UK got killed for his trouble and the cops said it was self defense.
can't think of a much more stupid crime.

I used to think that a well-staffed gun shop and an NRA meeting were just about the only places left in America where you'd never see an armed robbery attempt. I guess this just leaves NRA meetings as safe.

I wonder if the guy considered a couple different stores and somehow decided on the gun store?? It would be interesting to hear his side of what made the gun store his mark over say, the grocery store.

mind you had somebody attempt to mug me on sentry duty through a chain link fence :uhoh:
not exactly sure how that was supposed to work.:banghead:
had a bizarre conversation with my SGT about if I could shoot him or not.
as he continued to attempt to stab me through the fence.
having taken one step back to avoid his knife.
settled on phoning the police calling him names and occasionally poking him with a broomstick till the coppers turned up and set a dog on him.:D

...

Charles Darwin would be soooo proud of this ... eh...... self-removing phenotype of homo sapiens.

ought to try the navel training base there

Never really had any desire to teach my bellybutton any amusing tricks or stunts, but if they could teach it to not collect lint or catch crumbs when I'm at shirtless barbecues, I might give the training center a try.

I remember that clearly. It was back in the day when we still had a real country and common sense was still common. The gunshop employee shot the guy with a S&W Mod. 29 .44 magnum as I recall.

Humm.... well I cant say I would have done the same

Maybe not, but shooting a thief, on bicycle or not, is something we need a lot more of...

I've tried and failed to find an online film clip of Ray Charles putting a couple rounds next to the head of the would-be boy guitar thief in the uncut version of "Blues Brothers."

Among the funniest moments in a classic film with several good gun scenes. Carrie Fisher armed with an automatic rifle and a rocket launcher beats Carrie Fisher in Jabba's slave harem costume any day.
