manufacture date/little help?

found a S&W 640 in 38 special today, in good condition for a decent price.

says 640 on the frame, no dash, serial number is CAA3xxx

the questions i have:

1.) a 640 no dash in 38, is it rated for +P ammo? barrel only said 38 special

2.) whenabouts was this one made?

3.) any problems/issues i should be aware of with this model? (ie, 640 no dash)

The 640 NO dash 38 Centennial Stanless DAO built on round butt J frame with three screws, rated +p 1-7/8" bbl was introduced in 1989. 1993 the 3" was discontinued. 640-1 (1996) changed to 357 J Magnum Frame.

I think the CAAxxx guns came in about 1996.

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, the Model 640 no-dash was produced 1989-1996. However, the serial number pages list the CAA-- numbers for Oct. 2003. (***?) Since that date is listed between Aug. 1994 and Jan. 1996 entries, it appears to be a typo. Assuming a typo, looks like late 1994 or sometime in 1995.
