Marine admits he shot himself, Anoka Sheriff's Office says
2welt082103.l.jpg

An Andover man who told authorities he had been shot while trying to help a stranded motorist has now acknowledged that he shot himself, according to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office.

On Monday, Adam D. Welter, 20, told authorities that when he stopped to help a stranded pickup truck driver, the man shot him in the left shoulder, said Anoka County sheriff's Capt. Bob Aldrich. Welter is a U.S. Marine on leave and was scheduled to return to active duty Monday. His wound wasn't life-threatening and he was released from a hospital Monday.

But a Sheriff's Office investigation determined the wound was self-inflicted.

Welter apparently was despondent about an impending long-term overseas military assignment, according to a news release from the sheriff's office issued this morning. It said Welter expressed deep regret for the incident and that his family will be working to get help for him.

Welter had been in training about a year and came home for a two-week leave before he was scheduled to be stationed in Hawaii, Welter's mother, Valerie Welter, has said. It wasn't clear where he was to be sent.

Attempts to contact Welter at his home Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Now that's an odd one! Will he/should he be charged with damaging mililtary property under the UCMJ?

Weiner.

We had a rash of suicides over a few months when I was in Okinawa. One guy told his gunny he'd kill himself if he had to go. When he arrived, he walked straight to the barracks, climbed the stairs to the top, and jumped.

Never could understand it. Okinawa, or anywhere else for that matter, isn't that bad.

Broken up over going to Hawaii? It ain't that bad, dude. Sure you spend some time running around the hills & forest, but come on! I don't care if they sent me to Antarctica, I wouldn't shoot myself.

Let's see. This guy breaks down because he is being sent to Hawaii? There is a Marine base on the north side of Oahu, near the beach with the big surfing waves. All these hot young honey's laying in the sand catching rays in the string bikinis. Tough duty.

Its a sad case, he may have some pretty tough circumstances he didn't want to leave behind. I wouldn't want to go abroad for some months when a parent is terminally ill for instance. None of us have any idea what the circumstances are, but I am sure we all remember the craziness of youth (some of us are still there) and doing things that seemed a good idea at the time.

Hope he gets some help.

Every association has its bottom 10%.

Training about a year? Depending on his MOS he might have just gotten out of school, which means he still has no idea what the Marine Corps is really like...

The crime he's guilty of under UCMJ is Malingering.

915. ART 115. MALINGERING

Any person subject to this chapter who for the purpose of avoiding work, duty, or service--

(1) feigns illness, physical disablement, mental lapse or derangement; or (2) intentionally inflects self-injury; shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

The FBI has just declared it a "good shoot", apparently his leg made a threatening movement.

Kids who make it out of boot at the island or SD know what it is to be a Marine. You get to be one by graduating off the island and SD. Other than combat, the hardest thing about the Marine Corps is becoming one at boot.
After that, it's like a regular job [ except for combat, then it's not "regular" at all.

By that time you are well aware of what your title means to yourself and others.

Had a kid in RVN shoot himself in the calf with a gov 45 to get home. Nasty, and as soon as he had inflicted the injury, he knew it wasn't worth the pain and hobbling to get home. He did 3-5 in the brig if I remember correctly, but that was 32 years ago.

He obviously needs help and as he has graduated from boot and is a Marine, I wish him all the best in recovering and getting as much help as it takes to square the situation away, whatever that may be.

Semper Fi all you devil dogs out there !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
