Good Samaritan shot for his trouble

A stranded motorist apparently shot another man who pulled over to help in Anoka County.

Police say a 20-year-old man was shot early today after he pulled over near Andover and offered to jump start the pickup truck of the stranded motorist.

The man was shot in the shoulder and is expected to be fine.

There was no word on any arrests or motive.

...and this is why it takes forever (ok, it's one of the reasons, anyway) to get somebody to stop and help you when your car breaks down. I know that incidents like this, when viewed against the total number of times somebody stops to help a stranded motorist, are extremely rare, but it's always present in my mind when I pull off the road to help somebody. This is also why I never stop when I'm by myself. Is there another person in that car I can't see who's planning to kill me and take my car? It's quite a concern.

Was told in KY and TN people will stop to help a stranded motorist. In CA we let the CHP do that stuph.

Wanted to stop when I saw people in a dangerous situation ((1) woman walking across the Bay Bridge or (2)after their car gave out, two old ladies walking on a on-ramp with 1 mile to go to reach the end but in both instances the traffic was too heavy for me even to pull over. In the former, there was a highway patrol car right behind me and he didn't see the lady on the bridge until it was too late. By the time he had turned around, she jumped. ).

About 20 years ago, I stopped to help out a woman who was trying to change a tire by herself.

She drew down on me as I walked up, and I politely raised my hands, told her that she could change the bleepin' tire by herself, turned around, and got back on the bike.

Another time, I stopped to help an elderly couple, and they kept trying to give me $10 - finally told 'em to give it to some charity.

I stopped to help out a woman on the interstate on time and agreed to take her to the next town in order to get her car towed. We were back on the road only for a minute or so before I feel a snub nose barrel poking in my ribs.

She was going to rob me and take my car!

I planted my right foot on the accelerator pedal, and she started screaming at me to stop or she would shoot me. I merely looked at her (even though I was about as scared as I have ever been) and told her to do it, and she would die in a fiery car crash (over 80 MPH by now, still accelerating). She finally broke down and handed me the S&W .38, and I stopped quickly and let her out! I kept the S&W and turned it in to the police in the next town...

If I had only not stopped to help her...

I've stopped to help people numerous times. And held a pistol by my thigh in my left hand during our entire drive. Never had a problem.
