Hey guys. I"ve looked all over the web trying to find a way to determine how much this gun is worth and had no luck. Ended up here figuring there is probably someone knowledgeable on the subject.

My grandfather passed down a .240 Weatherby magnum, Mark V rifle to me. I have hunted with the gun several times in the past and it always seems to catch other hunters eyes? They ask what kind of gun it is and are always OOAhhing at it. Is this a rare gun? How much would it be worth? Thanks for any input!

Mark V Weatherbys are tough to value because they have been made in Germany, Japan, and the US in lots of variations over a period of 50 years. Look at Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun Values, and see how yours matches their descriptions. You can pay Weatherby to date your rifle, but IMO that is less of a determiner than grade, chambering, condition and where made.

Thanks for the input Grey...this one was made in Japan, which I was a little surprised to see. I will check the Blue Book - THANKS!

While determining % condition please make sure to use the guide at the front of the book. Wood is graded poor fair good very good exc. and metal is graded in percentages, % of the origininal finish remaining on the gun. The guide in the front of the blue book is very helppful.

the 240 is proly the least produced of the weatherby line, since it was eclipsed so fast by other .24 rounds. It is still faster than other 24 rounds, but there wasnt that much improvement, and the 220 swift and the 22 250 would smoke it anyway. So it could be a rare bird, but still not worth much. i think condition will play a big role here.

Check the Gunsamerica or Gunbroker auction sites on the web and see what they are going for there. The price on the auction sites are usually pretty close to ballpark. A shop will give quite a bit less on trade or to take it off your hands.
