Marlin 1894 rifle velocities ??????

I am wondering what velocities others are getting from their .357 Marlin 1894 with the 18 1/2" barrels.

Specifically, I am wondering about +P .38 Special 158 grain that normally move at 890 fps from a 4" revolver.

And, .357 Magnum 158 grains at 1200 fps from a 4" barrel and 180 grains 1130 fps from a 6" barrel.

What numbers are ya'll getting?

I have an 1894c and Rossi 92. Both are great rifles.

Have you looked at Winchester's web site? The one for the ammo side. They have some velocity data or they did last I looked a year or two ago. Look for other ammo makes and see if they give data for rifles. I bet they have it somewhere.

Brian Pearce did an article for Rifle mag dealing with the 357 rifle. Some Buffalo Bore loads were going over 2000 fps with a 158 gr bullet.

The normal amount you can expect seems to be around 3 to 400 fps over the handgun speeds. The last time i chonoed my loads i was shooting a max load of 2400 and a 158 gr Winchester and got 1860 fps from a Rossi.

The problem is when you push a pistol bullet that fast they sometimes blow up. Hornady makes a 158 soft point XTP that would be better for deer than a hollow point. Gold dots were spoken highly of in the article but i thought they were kind of soft myself. Remington has a 160 SP that should do well as long as you watched the speed.

My Marlin as far more accurate across the board than the Rossi. The Marlin has a 1/18 twist and the Rossi has a 1/30 twist. My Rossi never shot lead very well. My ballard rifled Marlin loves the stuff.
