I have a 1978 model 1894. It pairs up real well with my 5.5 Redhawk. I am one of those guys that like the dual caliber guns. I use this rifle for my woods gun. I've taken Mulies, Whitetails, Javelina, Bobcat, Coyote and many varmints with this gun. All were shot with 200 gr jacketed soft points. I plan on an Elk hunt next year if drawn. I will add to the trophy collection. But I will be using 300 grain hard cast lead to harvest the beast. Anyone have a 44 rifle they like to use and not just carry or keep in the safe?

I bought a used Marlin 1894 at the Medina, OH Gun Show (after looking at several over the years) in the late '80s to go along with my 29.

My granddad (I live on the west side of his farm) loved bear hunting and I always figured the way for me to do it was with a .44mag on both hip & shoulder.

Ironically, by the time I found the 1894 I had no interest remaining to kill any black bears. I did use it for groundhog eradication for a few years, it is very accurate with white-box 240gr.

My new production (Remlin) 1894 has mainly been used to dispatch porcupines. It does so with authority. 240 grains of lead tends to get most any job done. It certainly worked on the two deer I took last year.

I have a Ruger 96/44 lever that I use all the time. I would not hesitate to use it on elk or even big bears with the right bullet at reasonable range.

I have an 1894 I bought back in the mid 1970s and used it for a time on deer. I prefer a 240grn JHP for that nice rifle but get better results with 200grn JHP in my SBH.
