Hi all,

My friend just purchased an older 336 and according to the S/N he believes it's from the 80's. The rifle didn't come with a manual and he would like to learn how to break it down and what the manufacturers recommended cleaning steps are.

I appreciate any help,

IIRC, he can download a manual from Marlin's website.

The 336 hasn't changed very much over the last uhmmmmm 40 years or so, other than that stupid hammer-blocking-button-safety that was added some time in the late 80's-early-90's time frame.

That stupid button safety cost me a really nice big Bambi one season...
 
If the gun was made after 1969 simply subtract the first 2 digits of the SN from 100 to get the date of manufacture. For example if the first 2 digits are 24 the gun was made in 1976. The same code applies to guns made after 2000 as well. For older guns www.armscollectors.com has a link to Marlin date codes.
 
Pull the lever down to open the action about a third of the way. Remove the screw that the lever is piviting on. Pull the lever out. Pull the bolt out. The ejector, which rides in a slot in the bolt is still in the action. Look inside to see where it is so that you can put it back where it belongs during reassembly. It will drop out, don't lose it. You can now clean the bore from the breach end, and wipe out the inside of the action with a solvent on a rag. I do not recommend further disassembly. Use a spray can of gun scrubber if you need to clean the inside more thorougly.
