I've posted about this before but I've found out more about the problem. While I had the cross bolt safety on and pulled the trigger the hammer dropped and the round didn't go off as designed...this is good. But when I took the round out and looked at it there was a slight impression in the primer from the firing pin. I put a new round in the chamber with the safety still on pointed the rifle down range and squeezed the triger with the same result. It didn't fire but there was a dent in the primer and the hammer is standing well off of the firing pin as it is supposed to. I'm sure that something has happened to the firing pin and this is what leads me to think so. When I take my thumbnail and push on the end of the pin where it is struck by the hammer the pin stays in and it seems to me that the spring should be offering some resistance and pushing the pin back out. So what seems to be happening is the inertia of the hammer hitting the stop block is causing the loose firing pin to bump the primer even though it is on safety. At least this is my guess. Ideas anyone? I would bet that that firing pin is supposed to spring back into position. I called Marlin and they wanted me to send it in but I'd like to do a little research first. Until then my 336 is temporarly retired. Thanks for any feedback

I removed the firing pin nothing wrong there everything looks in good shape. my next guess is the safety. Looks like I'll end up taking it to a gun smith.
