My marlin 336 seems to be trying to " let in two"
Would loading cartridges to a slightly longer coal help any?

No. Generally the lifter serves also as a cartridge stop.In th lowered position (handle pushed forward), the cartridge is allowed to fully exit the magazine tube. When it is raised, then the bottom of the lifter prevents the suceeding cartridge from exiting the magazine tube.

Are you using reloaded cartridges or factory loaded cartridges?

Can you post pictures?

I really can't tell you anything about the 336, but the Marlin 94 double feeds badly with a really short OAL. It jams tight enough to need tools.

I plan to load the Lyman 311041,but right now it won't cycle factory either.
I've read about bending the lifter up ,but I wonder if a longer over all length cartridge might help to keep the next cartridge farther forward in the magazine so it won't slip out that small amount that jams the carrier.

OK, so you're loading handloads. That could be a factor (so I was wrong when I first said no earlier). Unlike most shotguns that have two shell stops, the Marlin's carrier/lifter is the shell stop. Compare the length of your handloads with a factory 30-30.

Load some dummy rounds to the oal and bullet that you wish to use (I often use tired brass for this) and see if they will load. Snap caps are also a decent diagnostic for feeding. It is possible that something else is going on here.
