I am looking at making a short barreled rifle out of a Marlin 336. The plan is to make a 10-12 inch barreled rifle, parkerized with ghost ring sights. The barrel length will be determined by the mag tube. I would like to be able to fit 3 rounds in the mag tube. With 4 rounds total, I can't picture any situation in which I would need more. The idea is to make a rifle that is so small and handy that I can have it with me anytime in the woods. My dilema is this:
Should I do this with a 30-30 or .35 Remington caliber rifle?

In looking at data from 10" contenders in 30-30, I should still be able to take a deer sized game at the less than 100 yard distances that this rifle is to be made for. It also can be pulled into use as a reasonable rifle for self defense should the need arise. I am leaning toward the 30-30 since I have seen data for this cartridge from shot barrels and ammo and brass is easy to aquire. Any thoughts?

I have papered SBRs, SBS, & machinegun already. It is not really that much paperwork. 2 forms in duplicate, a fingerprint card and a $200 check. The killer is the wait.

I think either of those calibers would work. I prefer the heavier bullets for the .35 remington, but that's just a personal thing.
Another thing you might consider is a model 1895 in 45-70 (it also comes in 450 marlin, 444 marlin) Any of those would make a formidable big bore SBR.
The model 1894 is available in 44 mag. That wouldn't be a bad thing either...
