I bought a used 336w in .30-30. The rifle looks brand new.

Shooting Winchester factory ammo - the cases split at the shoulder on the angled part of the case - a short approximate 1/4" split running up the shoulder, not around the circumference of the case.... The cases did not appeared to be swelled abnormally - just a tiny little split in the case, on new cartridges/brass. Extraction was a little sticky as well.

What do you think - a bad box of ammo or is this is an indication of a problem with the rifle. I have not tried other ammo.

Thoughts?

Unless the rifle has been re-chambered to 30-30 AE, I would bet it is just a bad lot of brass.

Does the shoulder angle and body taper of the fired case match the unfired factory brass?

If it does, I'd buy another box of ammo of a different brand and try that before you get too excited just yet.
