I just bought a nice old Marlin 39A that will cycle and shoot CCI mini mags flawlessly. But will not feed Federal bulk pack ammo.

I'm guessing that this is due to the shape of the hollow point bullet on the Federals.

Does anyone have any advice on where to start troubleshooting?

How is it mis-feeding?

Check the cartridge guide in the roof of the receiver.
On the exploded view it's part number 27.

Also check the cartridge guide in the right receiver wall to insure it's working properly.
It may be a formed flat spring or a steel bar with a spring under it.

Tighten the take down screw. Mine was misfiring and not ejecting. Tightend up the screw. Back in business.

Inspection revealed the cartridge guide in the right receiver wall to be working properly, but the cartridge guide in the roof to be well worn. There is also a loosely fitting outer magazine tube.

I ordered the cartridge guide from Brownell's as well as a new barrel band pin, and outer magazine tube.

As fast as Brownell's is I should be posting results within a couple of days.

Thank you all for the excellent ideas.
