I have a Marlin 39A that I inherited from my father and I took it to the range today to give it a whirl. This is second time that I've had a range session with this particular gun and the first session I had no issues. Today however was a different story. On every round I had to re-cock the hammer before the gun would fire. I discovered that the if I manually pushed the firing pin back in toward the muzzle, the gun would fire on the first trigger pull. I've never attempted to disassemble a lever action gun so I'm a little skeptical about attempting anything, but I found a blueprint and I think I can handle breaking it down. I'm kinda guessing that the firing pin channel is somehow extremely dirty and that is keeping the firing pin from moving freely enough. What do you think? Any help is appreciated.

Takedown is really simple. Remove the big screw and then the rifle will come apart along the parting line in the receiver. You might have to wiggle it a bit as the fit is really tight. As it comes apart the bolt will just fall out allowing easy access for cleaning. Good luck.

There is a spring in the receiver that has to be pushed and held with a turn of a screw to avoid damaging the receiver during cleaning. You might want to go to the Marlin web site and see if there is a section with downloadable manuals for their rifles. I'm sure you could also call Marlin and get a manual for it. They are really well made and I think my 39A is the best .22 I ever handled, shot or owned. Man-sized rifle in a light caliber. Very accurate and real quality workmanship and materials. Check for the manual before you tear into it. JMHO.
