So I was recently given a Marlin 30-30 that is a 336cs best I have found was that it was made in 1983 but I can't find anything out about the (cs) part. what does it mean and what is the rarity?
While I was looking into all of this my moms husband asked about his model 39as. I can find all kinds of info on the 39a but nothing on the (as) does anyone have any info on these?

My understanding is that the S in CS refers to the cross-bolt safety. It should be a deluxe carbine - checkered wood - that being designated by the C, with the @ 1981 introduced cross-bolt safety, thus the S. Sometime in the mid 1980s, Marlin dropped the S designation.

I believe that the same will apply with the introduction of the "hammer block safety" on the 39A.

The 336cs does have the cross bolt saftey and when I looked up the serial # I understand it to be a 1983 the wood is not checkered. it was my understanding that CBS stood for cross bolt safety. thank you for clearing that up

I am pretty confident about the S denoting the CBS on the rifle. The C should stand for carbine and while contemporaneous 336C's were "de-luxe" stocked, Marlin was fairly notorious for offering a hodge-podge of combinations in its line up. In any event, you have a great JM rifle in a timeless classic of a cartridge. Enjoy!

Well it was free so I'm excited lol. needs some cleaning up but I look forward to hunting with it this fall.
