Marlin 60 Age

I have been trying to determine the age of my Marlin 60. I've heard that the serial number is the way to go (you subtract the first two numbers from 2000 or 100 to get the year your marlin was made). However, if I do that then my Marlin was apparently made in about 1904...which I kind of doubt.

The serial number is 964XXXXX.

It's made in 1996. Might want to remove the complete serial number now.
