not one, likely , since 81's have been made since '37, continuously, but went to models from the 1970's forward, called 781, then 881, then and now on , 981's.

I even took the stock off and couldn't find anything. I was expecting to feel foolish when someone to told me it was in some obvious place. This rifle was bought new around 1955 or so by my uncle & needs a rear sight. The wood is absolutely gorgeous, though, real nice burled walnut. Looks like it should've been on a high dollar gun. Thanks.

you may have to take out of the stock, but look on the very back, left side of the receiver. If there are two holes there, then what you need is a factory peep site!!!!! which you will fall in luuuuuuv with.

My first gun was a Marlin M80C in 1954--still have it. No serial # at all. Essentially it's the same rifle except for tube feed.

There is a Marlin reference book by Brophy, which goes into detail on this. I am inclined to think the 1968 law mandated it, also.
