Does anyone know where the serial number is located on current-production Marlin 1894s (in particular, the 1894C in 357 and 1894CL in 32-20)? Is it on the tang or on the receiver? I'm considering getting one and I'd want to put a tang sight on it. Marlin's catalog & web site say the serial number is on the side of the receiver for the Cowboy models, but they don't say anything about the regular 1894s.

Odd, I just bought my new too (then again, I don't know how long it's been in storage) and my serial is on the tang not the receiver.

Um, I'm going to go with a NO on that one. Maybe you could have the serial number engraved someplace else on the rifle first and then drill the original but I'm pretty sure destroying part of the serial number on a gun is frowned on by daddy government.

Called Marlin this morning and was told they are putting the serial number on the tang on the regular 1894s. Only the Cowboy models have a clear tang and the serial number on the side. Further, none of the rifles are drilled & tapped from the factory for a tang sight (which I expected, but wanted to confirm).
Now obviously there are regular 1894s out there with the serial numbers on the side... whether they made them like that for a while, or sometimes they do & sometimes they don't, I don't know. I guess I'll have to look specifically for an 1894 with the serial number on the side, or pony up the extra dough for the Cowboy model.
