I have a Marlin Model 99 M1 in .22 cal and haven't found much on its worth but its in really good shape and i wanted to redo the stock with a nice clear coat on it to make it look nice but if its not hurt would i demolish any value the gun holds?

Decide do you care more about its value, or about having it the way you want? Even untouched its not super valuable or a formal investment IMHO. I have seen them between $75 and $150 used, often without rear sight. I've seen slightly higher but they are likely to get lower offers. Do you have the original rear sight that is somewhat hard to come by? I have a 99m1 w/ sight and scope I bought used with the stock already refinished; it was a real bargain price even with the stock redone. I'm happy and not selling even for double :)

I wouldn't worry to much either way. If you plan to keep it - do what you want. If your going to sell it for the next toy then maybe hold off?

They aren't known as collectibles, it's essentially a model 60/995 with handguard and different sights. I doubt you'd harm its value by refinishing the wood. Been thinking of doing the same to an 80's vintage 995, the varnish is flaking in places.

I won't sell it cause it was my first rifle. its missin the rear sight and the blueing isn't to bad but not 100% and has a tasco scope recently added to it (don't shoot worth a damn though) the magazine tube had to be replaced and is about an inch to short so it doesn't function good on the last or second to last round. but just from the outside looks like a good/clean rifle.

Valueing it at $100 is alot to me for a used 22 rifle so thats what got me scared to fool with it.

If anyone can find an original 99M1 in mint shape for $75 to $150, jump on it. A lot of M1 Carbine owners look for a 99M1 look-a-like to shoot 22lr. I had to pay more than $200 to get a mint 99M1. Then one needs a 99M2.....

The original rear sight for the 99M1 and 99M2 was an adjustable sight that clamped to the 'scope grooves on the receiver.

ADDED: I checked Numrich Gun Parts Corp, and the rear sights are sold out. If they are available, one would have to contact Marlin Parts & Service, and the part number from the factory instruction material that came with the gun would help with an inquiry there.

Stock engraving

I have a Marlin 99M1 which I purchased new in late 1968 or early 69 at the BX on Keesler AFB.
.
It is engraved on the right butt stock with a 2 inch circular badge depicting a squirrel. This is the way the gun came, new in the box. The photos of the 99M1 that I have seen on line do not have this. Is my gun in any way unusual or more valuable because of this engraving?

Heres my 99M1 & 989M2, these rifles are getting more and more collectable by Marlin fans as the years go by. Likes has been said a original rear site for one will cost you $50, $60, bucks if you can find one and if the person knows what they have.

MolleMan, if your 99 M1 is in good shape I would not do anything to it, just in case you ever decide to sell or trade it. I collect Marlins and the finish on a rifle makes a big differance to me. I had rather have one with a little ruff original finish than one that has been redone.
