I used to have a Marlin guide gun in 4570. I loved it but my wife convinced me to give it to my father-in-law for a birthday and I've missed it ever since. Now I'm thinking about a new lever action from Marlin but I'm unsure about the caliber. I don't yet reload, but most likely will in the near future.

I'd like a robust round, something that I could use to hunt javelinas when I get around to that, or anything else I wanted to shoot. I like the shorter barrel of the guide gun, but wouldn't be adverse to buying a longer barreled rifle and having it cut down.

SO...

4570?
444?
450?
30-30?
XLR or regular?

I appreciate any advice.

Man I would have never given away my guide gun..... but be that as it may I would go for the 450 Marlin or at least the 45-70. Though the others would work just fine I love the big bore rifles. I have done a little reading on the 450 and it seems to be the 45-70 of our century. More power, and better range. But that will mean a little more recoil, but if you loved the 45-70 then it should not be a problem. Good luck.

If you hand load get the 45-70 brass is more available than the 450 and you can load it up to the 450 in fact the 450 just mimics heavy handloads in 45-70 so non-reloaders could have the same.
