Marlin (Glenfield) 30A 30-30?

I just bought a Glenfield Marlin 30A 30-30 with a 4x32 Marlin scope. I can't find much info on it and I did a search here and found nothing. How does it compare to other lever action 30-30s?

It is almost mint and I wonder if it has ever been shot. The feeding port on the side of the receiver doesn't even have a mark on it. Also there is a sitcker on the but pad and scope that would have worn off if it was shot much.

It was stored in the attic for many years and has a layer orange sooty dust that I have removed a little to see the true condition of the metal. I am looking to sell it because I have no real need for it. If anyone wants it and doesn't mind doing the clean up, let me know before I clean it up, otherwise I will clean it up and post it in the for sale section.

What is good for removing this sooty dust? I have been thinking about using WD-40 but I was wondering if windex or some other kitchen cleaner might cut the greasy dust better. I don't want to harm the wood or metal so tell me what is safe on bluing and wood. Thanks.

I don't think I'd use kitchen-type cleaners. Many contain ammonia, and any that gets into little crevices or between the parts and pieces will cause rust.

Take the stock pieces off, and wash the metal with gasoline or Varsol or brake cleaner. Then, spray it very lightly and wipe it with most any gun oil or rust-preventing lubricant.

It's possible that gasoline might hurt the finish on the wood, but WD 40 won't--nor will soap and water.

Multitudes of options, of course.

Glenfield 30/30

The Marlin Glenfield was made for Western Auto.
They are as sound as any other Marlin in that
class. They just don't have as many frills.

I have a Marlin 30A I bought in 1990/91(?). Not as fancy as some of the other fish-brand rifles, but a good solid shooter. If I do my part, shoots sub-2" @100Yds

The Glenfield line of Marlin rifles was sold at a lot more discount houses than Western Auto. K-Mart before the ascent of Walmart carried the Glenfield 30-A and 30-AS.
I have a 30-A which has a half magazine (4 shot) and pistol grip stock. Front sight is a 3/8" dovetail w/o base. They were/are basic guns.

This is my favorite configuration of the Marlin 336, as with the birch stocks, is the lightest configuration except for possibly the new spike-horn. My next favorite is the 336-A w/24" bbl and half magazine.

Mine was in fair condition wood, good to excellent metal, as I was looking for one for a project gun.

Mine had a 6X scope and atrocious see through rings which "fell off" and disappeared after I got it home.

These guns don't command a high value, but are outstanding "woods" guns. Mine too will shoot <2" 5-shot groups @ 100yds with jacketed and ~3-4" with 157gr FNGC cast bullet @ 2,350fps. Not bad for a 20" bbl 'lever action'.

Value of your gun will be ~$200-$250. No real collector value.

To clean up, I would recommend a good bore solvent followed by gun oil such as CLP on metal surfaces.

For wood, a good furniture wax such as "Pledge" will do.

Both of the above applied to a soft cloth will do the job quickly and easily.

I would also clean the bore as if it was recently fired, or new- as dust will have also accumulated there with any oils that were present when stored.

Marlin Scopes were manufactured by same company the made TASCO at the time, I sold a number of them at Gun Shop I worked in in High School. Yours came as a "package" such as the Savages and Remingtons do now. I have a Marlin 3-7x .22 scope on a Marlin .22 bolt action that I purchased about that time (scope, -rifle was purchased much later for daughters), and it is marked "Tasco" on the bottom of the adjustment turret module. The scopes would only be of interest to possibly a collector.

Thanks for the info guys. I cleaned it up and it looks much better. Even though I don't have a use for this gun, I think I am going to shoot it at least once before I sell it because it just feels wrong to sell a gun without ever shooting it. We can't use rifles to hunt deer in Indiana so a 30-30 is really not good for anything that I know of.

I posted it in the for sale section but FYI, I am asking $200 + $15 shipping. I have seen them on gunbroker for more in worse condition so I think that is a pretty good price. I got it at a good price so I as long as I make a few bucks, I am happy. I want to use the money to buy things I really like.

I am more of a handgunner than a rifle or shotgun guy so I buy revolvers or semi-auto pistols more often than I buy rifles or shotguns. I am happy with one shotgun and a few rifles but I "need" at least a dozen handguns at any given time.
