I'm posting this for my brother-in-law who has inherited a "Marlin Model 410 lever action repeater" shotgun. It's serial number is 2XXX.

The very little I found was a Yahoo Questions answer which had a Model 410 with a 4XXX SN. The person answering said that these were bonus gifts for people who bought 4 shares of Marlin stock during the heart of the Depression. The guns retailed for something like $30. Apparantly they were only made for a few years, something like 1928-1932. Also, the SNs were not carefully tracked during that time.

Anyone confirm or verify what I found as accurate? Anyone know a date of manufacture based on the SN?

Thanks,
Q

The Marlin Model .410 Lever Action Shotgun was made from 1929-1932. Apparently Marlin has no serial number records for this model so I can't be more specific as to the date of manufacture. The action & buttstock used on the Model .410 was basically the same as the Model 1893. Marlin offered the Model .410 free if you bought 4 shares of company preferred stock at $25/share. The list price for the Model .410 was $30.80 during it's entire production. There were about 10,000 Model .410 shotguns produced. Hope this helps!

How about this one:

Also, sometime back in the 1960's, my hunting pard & I were pheasant hunting in western Kansas. That evening, the old farmer invited us in to see his guns.

He produced a series of run of the mill pump shotguns and .22 rifles from a hallway closet.
But then, from under his bed came an absolutely gorgeous Winchester M-1 Garand in an OD green canvas case he had brought home from WWII.

Next, a fitted leather case containing a mint Marlin 1893 lever-action take-down .410.
With an extra barrel for, as I recall, 30-30!
