Fella's;

A friend of mine has a chance to purchase a very clean Marlin MR-7 rifle for what certainly seems to be a fair price. I'm not concerned with price or caliber, but would like to get feedback on things like accuracy, reliability, known problem areas, things like that.

Therefore, if you have real world experience with the gun, I'd like to know what you think of it, both generally and specifically.

To complicate things, there's a Ruger stainless model 77 next to it in a comparable caliber, for a very slight difference in price. The Ruger I'm aware of, the Marlin I'm not well versed on. So, please help if you've actually owned or used one of the Marlins.

I would check out the threads on marlinowners.com, too.
Unless your friend doesn't care about ammo costs, it would be nice to know what the calibers of the 2 rifles in question are. He may like weird, oddball stuff, or may want to be able to actually buy ammo off the shelf. We don't know, but usually available ammo is better.
Nothing really wrong with the MR-7. Was kind of a best of all worlds design that a company not known for bolt actions put out. I think there were/are too many good quality bolt guns out there for the market to share very much.

I'm very specifically trying to stay out of a caliber dispute. Just trying to gain information about the Marlin's reputation.

Depends on what he wants to use it for. A lot of people like owning and using something a little different or unusual, myself included. The Marlin qualifies. They only made them for a couple of years and there is not a lot said about them either way. I have handled a few and liked them. I have not shot or owned one, but have never heard any thing negative about them.

If you want a solid dependable gun that just gets the job done to hunt with buy the Ruger.
