I recently purchased a Marlin 336CS as a deer/hog gun and most of my friends are busting chopps saying I should have got the Winchester. For the most part I think they are just doing it to give me a hard time but it has got me wondering.
Also I plan to use the Hornady 8080 150gr RN since I plan on making shots from less than 200 yards, under 100 if I have the opportunity.

My reasons for choosing the Marlin:
It has a side eject which allows me to add a scope if I ever decide I want to.
It seems less likely to have problems since there are less moving parts.

So if you had to choose one which would it be or if you have any pros & cons for either gun feel free to add them.

I have a Winchester 94 .30-30. I just bought a Marlin 336 .35 Remington. Both are great.

Marlin wins hands down for me. the design easy tear down. the lever doesn't clank like the Winchester. plus, like you say, they are easy to mount a scope on and generally have a more solid feel to me.

Own both. The Marlin is superior, IMO. Better trigger, stronger action, better accuracy, better scope mounting, better ergonomics.

Another plug for the Marlin for all the reasons stated above. Mine has to be about 20 years old and I've never had any problems with it.

You did fine. The Marlin is easier to mount a scope, easier to boresight (because you can easily remove the bolt by removing the lever with one screw), easier to take apart in the field, and it looks better...to me anyway. The Winchester 94 is a little lighter and as far as I can tell, that's all it has on the Marlin 336. The Winchester 94 has been produced to about five or six varying levels of quality over the years, while Marlins have all been top notch up until the last 6 months when Remington began production of the 336 and all other Marlins.

I also own both. I love them both but the marlin is the one I always reach for. The Winchester was a good deal and looks more cowboy, but if I had to keep only one it would be the marlin..

I own three Winchester 94s, four Marlin 336s (all pre-crossbolt-safety), and two Mossberg 464s in 30-30.

The 94's look cooler, the 336s are a better designed rifle, and the 464s have sticky feeding at times and wood that looks like it belongs on a Daisy BB gun. I would have already traded/sold the Mossbergs, but they have consecutive serial numbers. Anyone interested in a matched pair (I have all the original packaging, papers, etc.,) can PM me. :D

I prefer the Marlins simpler design with bigger beefier looking parts and springs.

The Winchester is definitely prettier and more refined but I use mine for hunting and prefer the ease of which the Marlin can be taken down and cleaned and oiled if it gets soaked with water from a day in the snow or rain.

Uhh... definately the marlin. Ive been looking to get my hands on another Marlin 336 in 30-30 for quite some time now. In my opinion it is one of the best deer rifles out there.
