Marlin or Winchester 30-30

I think for a brush gun, a Model 94 with a peep sight would be the best thing going. I have an older Model 64 with a peep and also a Browning 1886 in 45-70 also with a peep. At 66 years young, and with my new glasses, I can still see through the peep to shoot pretty darn good up to 100 yards. That's about all you need in the brush.

BroncLuno,

Say Lad, I forgot about my '99 in .300, and the other '99 in .250, I'll still go with Win. for the .375, but might have to ponder on the '99's, which one to do the heavy work. LOL;)

Either in reguards to action strength they are both single locking lugs and though we have three Winchesters the marlin is a smoother action so either.

For most people it is the marlin since you can mount a scope and though I love the Winchesters I would get a marlin

They are both fine....but the Winchester is actually the stronger action, do not let the neophytes say otherwise and real engineer knows that a truss is stronger than a shear first of all. Second, the chamber area of the Winchester is much, much more robust, allowing for much higher pressure. That all being said, doesn't matter much because the .30-30 will never test the strength anyway. I like them both, just find the Winchester is faster to my shoulder. I do have a few of each:

Yeah, when all this lever stuff gets kicked around, it's best to not forget the Savage 99. Available in more calibers and hell for strong :)

i perfer marlins and have 3 of the 336's and love them. I have one of the 94's in 30-30, the biggest thing that i dont like about them is I like to take my rifles down once a year to give them a good clean. the marlins are so easy i can strip, clean, and reassymble in 30 mins or so. the winchester i dont have as much experince with stripping so that may be my prolbem, last time it took me 3+ hours of frustration to get it back together(i wont do that for many years again) . but every time i go to get rid of the winchester, i take it out to shoot a group to show potental buyers and i just cant get rid of her(she shoots an easy 1" at 50 with open sights and with out trying much). Have fun.

Like my Marlin 30-30 so well I bought one in .35 Rem. Winnie's are okay, just find I prefer Marlin for the more solid feel and performance I've gotten over many years.:D

Thanks for all the replies, it's nice to know I didn't make one of the classic new guy mistakes. I figured both guns to be excellent but for me the Marlin just felt right. Again, it's nice to know I made a good choice.

Have one of each. The Marlin is well built while the Win 94 is more sleek.
Glad I was able to purchase both some years ago.
Have a peep sight on the 94 and a scope on the 336.

I have always preferred Winchesters over Marlins. They feel better in the hand for carrying, they point very naturally, and mounting a scope isn't an issue because scopes don't belong on leverguns.

+1.....You nailed it. Short and sweet! :)

and scopes on levers, please ..... :barf:

I have a marlin and my buddy has a win. I like the marlin better and I think he does too...
The win. is traditional though.

I'm in awe.

Does that mean that the scope on my Savage 99 308 is inappropriate? Does the scope on the 336 equal bad?

Seems to me there is a reason to have rifles configured for a use. The Winchester is a natural with iron sights. But the other two (and maybe the Mossberg?) take scopes very well. I think I'll keep my set as is :)

Scopes look great on a lever action Marlin or a Savage 99 or the BLR. If I had to scrape by with an old 94, I'd probably mount a scope on it too. Scopes on leveractions look especially great when shooting smallish southeastern deer in the early or late minutes of the day!

Nope, nothing wrong with it at all, if that's what you like!

For my eye's it's just all wrong.....Kind of like hoopin up a vintage car with modern wheels because it will ride better. :scrutiny:

I'll leave the scopes for the bolts and semi-autos. ;)

To all you purists out there with your panties in a bunch over scopes on levers, while you are out there having to pass up or missing or wounding deer or elk at 150 yards with your irons, Ill be splitting ribs and busting shoulders at 150 with my SCOPED Marlin .444 and filling my freezer. As far as looks go, I have yet to see a deer walk up and compliment my firearm for being the "prettiest" in the woods. Just because YOU don't do it does not make it wrong.

Can't hunt deer here anyway with a rifle so it means little to me. Deer (meat, not trophies) are not hard game to kill anyway. If I want a deer I head to my back woods during shotgun season and usually have one within 1/2 hour.....40-60 yard shots are the norm here.

For the most part though I stick with water fowling and game birds.....I find it more challenging and better eatin. :)

Like I already said, if you like it, there's not a thing wrong with it. It just doesn't suit my taste and I stated my opinion, like everyone else. That's all folks!
