I am thinking about picking up a Marlin XL7 for deer hunting. All shots will be 100 yards and in, but some may be over. I would say the max distance is 200 yards. What scope will accompany the XL7 nicely for my needs? Is there a scope out there around $50 that will fit the bill?

My XL7 (30-06) wears a Leuopold VX-1 3-9x40. But if I was on a budget I would give a serious look at the Centerpoint scopes at WalMart. They have a 4-12x40 for about $80 that looks really nice, my friend has one on his 10-22.

I would dig down deep, and save for a Bushnell Elite 3200 at minimum. I have a 4200 on mine, and love it.
I have a 3200 on a 30-30, but it is now going to be on a muzzloader.

nikon buckmaster is what i have

3-9x40

but honestly i tossed a cheap o' tasco 3-9x40 on mine untill i had money for a new one. it stood up to 603 rounds of somewhat hot loaded .30-06 i was happy since it cost me exactly 10% of that the rifle did. i payed 319 for the rifle and 31.95 for the scope

I have an Osprey International on mine. From what I understand, they're Aimpoint copies of some sort from China. Their website sucks (I bought mine from a seller at a gunshow). I have to say, copycat or not, it's an excellent scope. Bright, crisp, clear optics that work great in low light. And at $130 it was a steal.

I had a Leupold VX-I like mentioned above and didn't really like it. Honestly, if I was on a budget like you are I'd go to Wal Mart or online and look for a decent Simmons in that price range. Will it be the clearest? No. However, most guys I hunt with use them and I have also in the past and they have worked just fine and been clear enough for hunting.

If you want to spend more I'd recommend the Burris Fullfield II. You can get them for around $200 and it's by far my favorite scope I've used.
