I've been borrowing a Remington 700 BDL .243 for several years now, but since I'm graduating from college, I'm going to purchase my own rifle. I've read a few reviews on the new Marlin XL7 bolt rifle and have been pleased with the positive reviews. Having used a Remington, I know that that's a pretty good benchmark by which to judge any reasonably priced gun. Most reviews have said the XL7 is accurate, has a nice trigger, is smooth to operate and seems relatively well-built. Several other features make it comparable to rifles twice its cost. I'd love to buy a Remington 700 because its what I know and love, but I can't help but wonder what I'd be missing by buying a made-in-America XL7 for half the price. I know what I like in a rifle, but am not necessarily an expert. Any ideas?

I'm interested in it too. Unfortunately, there seem to be none available in the usual online shopping destinations (gunbroker, gunsamerica, auctionarms, etc) so I don't know if Marlin is actually shipping them to the public yet.

I have one... :) GREAT rifle for the money. At this time, I wouldn't go as far to say it's the most accurate rifle under the sun, but for under $300 out the door, new, and <1" groups with factory ammo, and not REALLY putting it to any real range testing yet, it's well worth it...

If you don't mind my asking, how much did you pick it up for, and where?

I got it for $300.08 ($276 + tax) at a local gun shop here in OKC, they still have a couple .270's sitting on the shelf that I am seriously considering snagging one if they still have them when our tax rebate comes in...

So, what could I expect to be missing out on by buying one? Durability, finish, accuracy, longevity, status???
