I'm trying to decide on a new bolt-action 308 and think I've narrowed it down to the marlin xs7 and Remington 700. I can get the marlin for 319 or the Remington for 379 both new in box. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Remington 700. It's 529 at local gun shop, but academy has it for 379. I'm not sure if there is a difference in the guns at the different stores?

I have a XL7 in .25-06. It is a fine gun, but I'd rather have a Remington 700. What caliber are you thinking?
A buddy has a Rem 700 SPS Tactical 20" .308. It is a good shooter. My .25-06 kills deer fine, and is an average MOA gun with 115 grain BT. I haven't had time to develop the 100 grain BT loads yet.

The X7 has a nicer trigger in my opinion. They are both freedom group guns and the barrels may be forged in the same factory. The Marlin has an external barrel nut, might make a barrel swap easier but no one hardly does that. 700 has more aftermarket parts and probably carries a little more cache if you want to impress the hillbillies at the range. They both shoot about the same 1 moa accuracy or better

I have an XS7 is 308 and love it. I put it in a Boyd laminated stock and it is just about perfect for me. Shoots moa all dajy long with federal 150's.

so I decided on the remington 700 adl since they felt about as equally good to me and it seemed a better deal at 379

thanks for the advice and opinions

I have owned Remington and Marlin rifles both pre and post takeover, and I won't touch another CCM rifle. Savage, Weatherby, Howa, T/C, Winchester and Tikka are just much better made rifles for the money right now. In Shooting Times recent comparison of factory rifles the Remington scored the WORST of all of them with a lackluster 2.33" average 100yd group! That is a long fall from being the most accurate out of the box rifle on the planet.
CCM has ruined Remington for me I won't touch another, their piss poor QC has dragged the Remington name through the mud. The last three I have owned have all had major issues.

$379 would be stupid cheap for a 700, are you sure that wasn't a 770? If not, than GO BUY IT! It's basically 1/2 off.

Probably an ADL synthetic or SPS in either case not worth a nickle much less $379, I paid $350 for one a couple years back and it was so bad I swore off Remington after being a loyal fan for 20 years. QC has gone to $#!^

I have owned a number of Remington rifles over the past 25 yr. The new ones are getting pretty poor IMO. I would look at the Savage or even the Mossberg in that price range. Remington seems to be relying heavily on past reputation while Mossberg and Savage seem to be putting out really good value.

Rather than just posting generalizations about Remmy's lowered QC, how about some specifics? I don't own any recent 700s, but am disappointed to hear of such a lack of qc in 700s. Wal-Mart has frequently sold 700 ADLs for $349. Never have owned one, but have seen 'em out at the range, within the past five-or-so years, and they seem to be o.k. (BTW, I'm not questioning anybody's opinion about recent 700s, just curious as to the specifics of the problems??)

My buddies recently bought 700 sps tac 20" .308 is not a lemon by any means. It is actually very nice right out of the box, and moa or less @ 600 yards is repeatable.
