Dunno, maybe it's because when I state facts in a discussion, whether it's in person or on the internet, I try to make them germane to some sort of point I'm trying to make.

Martial is the only kinda law they're gonna have in NOLA for quite some time. I wonder just what proportion of emergency vehicles (cop cars, fire trucks) were lost? Kinda hard to respond in a timely manner if you have to either swim or beat feet to the call and be limited to the gear you carry on your back.

when you say it, it doesn't seem as bad...hmmm.
facts are facts, it just didn't seem pertinent to the thread, which wasn't (isn't) about the racial profile of the looters in N.O.
I saw the video on Fox news last night and yup it was all black folks looting ..
If there was looting in a white area it would be white folks looting.
I was in NYC for the 1977 "black out" and saw just as many white looters as black looters.
Where I live now I only have one black neighbor--she wouldn't have to loot, she is so cute I would give her anything she needed

New Orleans is 60+% black. So it makes sense that a majority of the looters would be black. It also makes sense that most of the looters I saw on TV during the riots in Seattle at the WTC were white.
What doesn't make sense is this comment: "To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.
I've been to the Walgreens store mentioned in the article in an earlier post, and I can't imagine how that store ever oppressed anyone.
Typical 60's hippie-liberal horsehockey.
It makes me sad to think that much of my favorite city may be destroyed. Modern buildings can be rebuilt, but history can't.

98% of the people being interviewed, rescued, and shown on tv about the catastrophe are african american.
Once the poeple are safe, and there is "no one left to rescue." Then thats when the national guard/coast guard will stop being friendly and get serious.

You gotta watch it on this board. People here will be the first to cry "PC sucks" but the first to call you on it as well. I don't see your comments as negative in that way. If they were all blacks looting stores, then they were all blacks. I imagine if they were all Asian people, you would have said all Asians. What I saw were young black men.
Anyway, the situation down there is terrible. Many people are talking what they need to survive, food, water, medical supplies, first aid, etc. I can understand that. I can't understand the folks running into Athlete's Foot and ripping off all of the tennis shoes. Maybe they need shoes? I seem to think their motivation is different however.

That's what happens when you convince a huge portion of the population that they have had no part in creating their situation and cannot possibly have any part in improving it, because they're being held back by some mythical Whitey. They end up thinking that the reason they don't have any nice things is because they've somehow been prevented from having nice things by the same mythical "The Man," then when they see the nice things there for the taking, they take them.

It's not about race. It's about money. The people with money bailed unless they weren't thinking or didn't have their priorities in order (like concern about their dogs or "stuff"). The people who didn't have money didn't have a choice. If you look at the socio-economic status of the area, as a general rule, the white people have the money and the black people don't. The white people left. It won't take a rocket scientist to figure out the demographics of looting.
Also, if you are talking about procuring food, race is largely irrelevant. Anyone I know would kick doors if they needed food to survive. That includes me.

It's disturbing to read some reports of police joining in the looting, or just standing by passively while it goes on . . . almost as if they're acting as a security detail for the looters. (Hmmmm . . . that's really not so far fetched as it would seem at first. I wonder who the cops would take action against if some store owner showed up and used ballistic persuasion against the looters ransacking his shop?)

Hmm, the cops are letting them loot to survive - anyone keeping an eye on the gunshops? All of Sarah Brady, UpChuckie Schumer, and Diane Feinslime's laws won't stop one illegally aquired firearm from "floating" out into what's left of Nawlins...
