There will be hearings on two gun bills this Tuesday, 3/21/06 at 1:00 p.m. in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.

SB 910 Sen Hooper, et al Crimes - Self-Defense - No Duty to Retreat or Seek Safety by Escape

SB 911 Sen Hooper, et al Public Safety - Handgun Permits - Repeal of Finding Requirement

See http://www.mlis.state.md.us/ for more info on the bills.

SB 911 is the bill that would make MD a Shall Issue state. See you there!

The interesting thing is that the Castle Doctrine repeal law is basically what has gotten the gun issue into the news bigtime in other states, when the antis get all frothed up about what they think are "shoot first" laws. That might actually get our issue some press time...

I'm planning on trying to make it down, if nothing else I'd like to see what I do to A) talk to Giannetti, and B) support the CCW bill on that side of the legislature. Getting it out of the Senate might get Vallario off his tookus.

Seeing as almost no one can carry legally in MD, while getting a stand your ground bill on the books might be nice, it functionally won't help too many people. :(

I thought we already had castle doctrine in MD. What I'd like to see is where if it is a clean shoot you cannot be sued.

Yes, the law in MD is essentially the Castle Doctrine--you have a duty to retreat except in your home, or "castle". As I understand it, the bill under consideration would make our law like Florida's--you have no duty to retreat from deadly attack while you're anywhere you're legally allowed to be.

I can't be there by 1pm.....can't miss any more days of school for a while. But I will come by after school to see if things are still cooking along at 4pm.

I'll be able to attend for a short while. And I'll submit written testimony again.
