My dad has a sporterized Argentine Mauser he uses as a truck gun for keeping coyotes away from his cattle. It's a tack driver and has the smoothest action of any rifle I've ever shot, but the guy he bought it from cut the barrel down and ground the bolt down to clear the scope:fire:

I'd like a Mauser myself after experiencing what a joy it is to shoot my dad's, but I can't bring myself to permanently modify it. I'd like to use it as a deer rifle and everyday plinker, so I'd like to mount a scope. I'm thinking of one of those forward mounts that replace the rear sight, but I'm not 100% sure what will fit. I found this site http://www.gunaccessories.com/MilitaryScopeMounts/Mauser/index.asp that sells them for both the Yugo 48 and the German K98, but I'm not sure if either would fit a 24/47. From what I've read both the 24/47 and the 98 are "large ring" actions (I'm a Mauser newbie, so forgive me for not knowing what that means), so would the 98 mount fit the 24/47 without any modification to the rifle? It's very important to me that I don't have to modify the rifle in any way that I can't reverse it.

My other thought is to have a buddy of mine make me a custom mount. He has a garage full of machine tools, so it would be neat to have him slap a billet of aluminum in the mill and make me a custom mount. If buying a ready made mount which won't modify the rifle isn't viable, I'd appreciate any input for designing a mount. Maybe if there was enough interest we could make several for anyone who gets involved in the project.

Accumounts makes a nice no-gunsmith mount for $85 shipped.

Accumounts

They make a no gunsmith mount that is adaptable from Scout setup to standard rifle scope setup. Pretty slick, and very well built-- Accumounts is very well thought of in the surplus rifle field for their mounts.
