I've looked around and ER Shaw seems to be the only outfit that (within my price range) can make the barrel I'd like to use. 7x57, 20-inch varmint or semi-bull, threaded, and maybe fluted, preferably stainless.

They only have 1-9.5 twist for 7mm...I think that's probably OK; I'll largely be shooting 162-gr stuff. Will this twist stabilize 175gr bullets?

Any other suggestions on barrels in the $3-350 buck range?

I finally got a shot at putting together the Mauser-based rifle I've wanted for a looooong time - stoked! Primary use will be target action <300-yards.

Large ring or small ring? 1-9.5 should stabilize anything you want to use in 7x57

Dog Soldier,
Think the O/P was talking about a varmint type barrel but wants it for target shooting or maybe he has large varmints to shoot.
O/P, I would also check out some of the premium makers websites as they occasionally have specials on barrels that might fit what you want to spend. Depending on whether you have a local gunsmith, barrel blanks can be had in a number of differing styles and lengths. It is relatively easy for gunsmiths to thread and chamber mauser barrels from blanks.

Thanks - yeah, pretty much target shooting only. 7x57 is my favorite rifle caliber so seems fitting in a Mauser!

Thanks, The 7X57 is an amazing cartridge over looked today. The case is great for a relaoder. The broad range of .284 bullets makes it versatile. Sounds like an interesting project.

Was the 798 a true large ring. In other words will a standard large ring threaded barrel fit that action?

I was just about to mention the fact that Remington 798s were built using Zastava barreled actions.
They are not quite as refined as some as far as fit and finish, but are good strong actions.

The 98 action ( large ring ) is capable of quite a variety of barrels. I found a 7 mag barrel at Sarco in the former Shotgun News some time back for 79 bucks. I had to polish it out on the lathe and shorten it a bit plus thread it. It takes a lot of paitence doing the dremel work for it to feed and eject the magnum brass. The action unless it is flawed can take the pressure. I got the old rifle with an 06 barrel that the owner had a surplus of black tipped ammo for. A tracer in the night sky made a pretty swirl pattern. Not the first 06 barrel stretched by armor piercing black tip surplus.7 mag not the first choice but doable.
