I've been looking around for a Mauser K98. I've looked online extensively and in a few stores in my area. I've seen prices from the $250-350 range all the way up to and over $1000. I even saw one on gunbroker.com for a whopping $3000. The higher prices I've been seeing seem ridiculous for simple used bolt action rifles of which nearly 15 million were initially made. Does anyone know what a reasonable price for this rifle is?

The K98 is a highly collectible rifle, hence the price variance.
Every rifle nut should have at least one of these. They are
a true classic rifle in every sense of the description.

On the top will be original rifles with all matching numbers.
Rarer manufacturing codes will bring more money.

On the low end are parts guns like the Russian and Yugoslavian
"captures". This is what I would recommend if you want
a specimen or type rifle for your collection. I would highly
recommend you buy one that has an excellent bore, for your
shooting now, and any future the rifle may have.

You should be able to find a very nice K98 like that for $250 to $350.

One thing about the 15 million that were produced. MANY have been
hacked for sporters and rebuilt into other rifles by various countries
that picked these rifles up as surplus post-war. True, matching number
rifles that haven't been boinked or faked in some way are getting hard
to find. A $1000 is pretty much the bottom now for one of those. It will
go higher. I would recommend to anyone that is considering even thinking
about buying an original rifle to seek guidance from experienced collectors.
The chance of getting a boinked rifle these days is extremely high.

If you're looking for a shooter, I highly recommend that you get a Russian capture example. They are parts guns (i.e. they won't have any matching parts besides the barreled receiver), but they're perfectly functional and are more or less in the original military configuration. $250-350 is the going rate.

ha 15 million of em. thats why i hack them up. melt them down and use them for ballast

those nazi rifle will never be worth anything.all those sentimental fools talking about "history" and "divining up prices" are dummys

( incase you cant tell im being very sarcastic)

If you're just looking for an example of the type for use as a shooter, you can find Yugo mausers everywhere in excellent condition, for well under $300. I would get one of those and not look back. If nothing else, you can decide if you like the type well enough to start buying the more collectable types. You will always have a place in the safe for a shooter. :)

Once you get into German mausers, the price starts going up, depending on date and manufacturer codes, matching vs unmatching parts, condition, import marks, etc. They have more history, but are often in worse condition, or cost a LOT more money.
