I've always been fascinated with Mauser-Style rifles, paticularily K98 style Mausers, and since i'm on a budget I was going to get a Yugo M48 Mauser, but surplus 8mm Mauser has really gone up, and being able to stock up on ammo for cheap is important to me. Some of you might recall my Yugo M48 Mauser thread, and no, I haven't got a Mosin Nagant yet (will later on, though). I decided to go with a Mauser in .308. I stumbled apon the Spanish M1916 Mauser in .308. It's well within my price Range (200-250 dollars), and even though it's not a K98, I like the way it looks anyways. However, I have heard that It cannot handle regular 7.62x51 or .308 Winchester surplus ammo, and was chambered for .308 CETME. Is it safe to shoot 7.62x51 or .308 win. ammo in it? If not, are there any other Mausers that CAN take .308 win and 7.62x51mm within my price range? Thanks.

The Spanish FR8 and the Israeli K98 are large ring Mausers converted to .308. They would handle .308 ammo better than the 1916 Mauser.

The Yugo M48 is also a good gun and someone will probably be selling cheaper surplus 8mm sooner or later. Surplus ammo comes in waves with dry spells inbetween.

The Isreali K98's are sadly well out of my price range. But with the FR8.... how is accuracy and range with that short barrel? Where can I find a bayonet and stripper clips?

Also, the FR8's are also a little outta my price range. Meh. If anyone finds a cheaper .308 mauser, let me know. Until then, I guess I'll have to go with the Nagant.
