Just this week, purchased this late-1930s .22 caliber 5 shot bolt action devil.

Warning: If you are a purest (insisting that old rifles not be altered in any way), you'll be disheartened. Please know that I bought this (out of the estate of a German gentleman) for shooting, showing it off and leaving to my now 20-months-old Grandson. I invest and collect other things - I shoot my firearms.

Modifying the Mm 410B.

Thanks for the comments, Smokey Joe!

I have no plans for modification of any kind.

As for appearance and preservation, I may have the glossy finish on the wood taken down and satin finished. Then a coat of Renaissance wax.

For all the metal, I'll probably degrease/clean, then apply a few thin coats of Eezox (allowing complete drying between coats).

Something that I need to investigate is the trigger pull. Its sort of stagey and a few too many lbs.

Still resesearching the possible origins of the stock: a few votes for original (with aftermarket checkering and ebony capping) and a few votes for Fajen. There are no markings on the stock, just the typical Mauser buttplate.

Beautiful old rifle...

The Burgh--Frankly, I'm glad--IMHO, it's a very nice looking rifle as it is. My reaction was to your warning to purists. I too would be concerned especially with a too-hard trigger pull. And if you want to refinish the wood, well, have at it--It's YOUR rifle!

We'll be needing a progress report, with pix! :)

The Wood

What I tried (but failed) to say to purists: "If your standard of excellence is "original condition" with zero tolerance for ANY intervention in every respect, this will not please you. This is a very well maintained but probably enhanced (re-blued) and restored (possibly new stock) rifle."

I used to refinish old wooden furniture (lost many brain cells to StripEase). The gloss finish on this piece was not particularly well applied. It is the only cosmetic score below 10.
