I picked up 5 turk m38 mausers from SOG for $55 each. I was thinking of making one into a pseudo-scout. While looking for scope mounting ideas, I though aqbout just drilling & tapping the rear sight ladder for a section of picantinny rail. Does anyone know whether this will be stable? I see those mounts that replace the rear sight, but don't want to spend the cost of the rifle for a base if I can make a reasonable replica myself.

I bought the scout stock from centerfire systems and put a banner mauser in it that my dad picked up somewhere. They say that they are not for the straight bolts , but if you put a pistol scope on it ????:) Ramrunner

The rail works fine. You'll need to shim the rear a little to get the rail square to the bore.

Thanks, but I have a slightly new plan. If my calculations are correct, when the rear sight base is stripped, the front area where the screw hole is and the rear most portion of the base are level to the bore. However, the rear portion of the base is too thin to drill and tap for any reasonable sized screw. So, my plan is to cut off the "ears" that hold the sight ramp, leaving 2 level contact areas for the rail, then screw the front portion and silver solder the rear.

My only concern is that I can't find steel picatinny rail that is reasonably priced. Does anyone know if silver solder holds to aluminum?

Interesting you should ask this question...I'm contemplating something similar myself...Trying to make a budget scout rifle out of a VZ-24...Got a decent (sporter) stock off eBay, and have most other stuff lying around... I was also dismayed at the cost of the "scout mounts"...

Now, it seems to me, back in my welding days, I did once silver solder aluminum to steel...But it wasn't anything that required a great deal of strength, not sure it would hold up to much recoil...But, I suspect that if you could get a couple screws to hold, and used some of the industrial Epoxy it might hold (some of these modern epoxies are pretty amazing)...May try this myself....

I thought silver solder might be strong enough because it's used for sights and people silver solver rings onto barrels to barrels to make custom mounts. Plus, the ATF considers it "permanent", so it must be strong.

Scratch that, I just read my dup post on gunco and aluminum to steel is a no-go. Looks like I need a new idea..... but it won't be spending $80 for a piece of steel rail. :)

Somewhere i had website of a company that made a scope mount that replaced the rear sight assy on mausers. It used long eye relief pistol scopes. Ill look around and see if i can find it.

Thanks, but I've seen them. I want to have a lower mount that doesnt have that bolt-on look.

I got some used V blocks and ground some material out of the way until I could use them to hold Weaver mounts in the mill vise. Then I can cut the mount to fit the rifle receiver.
