So after talking to a bunch of you guys, I'm going to take my old model 50 (270 win) out of storage and wring it out at the range. Right now, there is no scope on it, but I would like to mount a scout style scope. The action is a large ring Mauser. I am aware of scout type mounts for the Turkish Mausers, but they replace the rear sight, and my rear sight looks nothing like theirs.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Johnny V,

I have a Mauser style Charles Daley in .243 Win that took my local shop some time to figure out the rings as the rear base and ring need to provide more height than the front. Turns out Weaver makes some 1" rings, part # 49143 that were perfect to mount my Nikon 4.5-14X BDC scope.

I dont know if this helps or not as I am not sure what a scout style scope is exactly. Good Luck!

Scout 'Scope Mount...

Johnny V--There are at least a couple scout 'scope mounts which attach to the rear sight base of a k98K Mauser. Brownell's carries one, the S&K Insta Scout Mount, Brownell's p/n 794-000-09AA, which goes for $51.00 in my 2-yo catalogue.

If your Mauser is not a 98, then you have to know exactly what it IS--the rear sight base may be different.

I think you will like the results if you make your Mauser into a Scout Rifle (actually a pseudo-scout per Col. Cooper--a "real" scout has to be .308 Win, but why bother to re-barrel??) I made a Yugo M-48 pseudo-scout--used a B-Square 'scope mount--and am very happy with it.

Call Brownell's--1-800-741-0015--and ask them for help. They know what they are about. BUT FIRST determine exactly what model of Mauser you have!!

i'm going to assume you have a jc higgins model 50 in .270 win, since the columbian model 50's were never made in .270.
the jc higgins model 50 was bult on a fn commercial mauser receiver and will already be drilled & tapped for standard fn mounts but since you want a scout mount you will have to drill & tap the barrel since they used a 3/8" dovetail rear sigh not a military rear sight.
the easiest way to put a scout mount on a commercial rifle is to drill & tap the barrel for a 1pc thompson contender mount

Thanks to all for the help. I really like the Mauser action, and yes, it's a JC Higgins. I think that drilling and tapping will end up being the way to go, and I think I can use the existing rear mounting holes for a ghost ring (back up) sight.

The more time I spend with this rifle, the more impressed I am. If anyone wants to let go of their JC Higgins model 50, just let me know......

your to late, i sold mine about a year ago.
most of them came drilled for a receiver sight as well as scope mounts so it would be very easy to add a backup sight.
if yours isn't drilled for a receiver sight you can use a williams wgrs receiver sight for an fn mauser, it mounts to the rear bridge using the original scope mount holes.

Just got back from the range, and that old rifle put 10 shots into a 3x4 group at 50 yards with iron sights and my 43 year old eyes. Five shots within 1 inch center mass. The rifle is capable of better accuracy than I am, and very much deserves a scope.

And here I was thinking on buying a new rifle, whatever for?

Old rifle, new rifle...

Johnny V--Glad you're working on the old rifle!

BTW, as you progress, we'd appreciate periodic reports, and a range report, WITH pictures!!
