Maverick 88 OR Mossberg Persuader?

It’s one of their “precision fit” models. It fits acceptably well after I sanded one end of the adapter plate, and opened up one of the screw holes in the base of the pad. I can tell it will be more effective than the squishy stock Mossberg pad that came on it.
You won't regret it, it lives up to it's name.

I sure hope so! I’m too old to get beaten up for fun!
I'm with ya brother, I have one on two of my shotguns the third has a Choate butt stock with a good pad. Not as good as the Limbsaver but better than what was on there.

Amazing how much difference even normal stocks make. Wood to plastic is a big difference. Took some 70s police trades straight to the range and those wood stocks are a killer. The telescoping AR-style stocks are all but metal, not much plastic and it's pretty rigid also. I am used to the Choate being those solid glass-filled ones which are also strong enough to knock down bank vaults but do not flex under recoil, either.

I go all with factory-ish plastic; even things like the Hogue overmold short stock I like are the same construction, a plastic shell that flexes a lot under recoil, but are rigid in normal handling. They help a lot.

I used to have to shorten my own stocks and if a handy type, it's surprisingly easy to belt-sand down rubber buttpads to match your stock, if anyone wonders about that.

Plain white box winchesters is all I remember. Boxes hit the trash bin at the range.

re: flexy synthetic stocks, here's the factory stock from an H&R Pardner

It's heavier than it's wooden equivalent and does not flex at all.

Made it to the range today— they only allow 5 shots for shotgun patterning purposes.
2 shots #8 Federal “shorty” shells, 2 shots #8 Winchester AA trap load, 1 shot Federal 3” premium 00 buckshot.

Everything was on paper at 10 yds. Shortys were comfortable to shoot as were the trap loads. The magnum buck shot — not so much!

People that shoot multiple rounds of that stuff are hard core—which I am not!

I need to find shorty buck shot and slug shells.

BTW… the new Limbsaver recoil pad is the real deal and worth the money!

@drband lets see the whole gun.
I don’t have a pic of the whole gun currently. Here’s a pic from the Mossberg site of my model:

20” cylinder bore barrel
I installed a Limbsaver recoil pad as noted a few posts back.

Get the 88...TFB did a "burn down" video on one...500 rounds of whatever they have and only stop when either gun breaks and ammo is gone. The 88 did a ton better than I though it would being such and inexpensive gun. I think you would be hard pressed to find a used 870 of any type for under $225, if you did, I'd think you would have to have some work done to it, probably nothing "special" but some work nonetheless

I’ve been thinking about my range time with the 88. I’m totally pleased with the function and recoil using the Limbsaver recoil pad (preserves the standard LOP of 14.25” approximately).

But… the standard LOP feels a little too long to use in an indoor defense situation. It’s just not very comfortable when I mount the shotgun, though I can do it.

I’m considering the Hogue 12” LOP replacement stock - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1006818334

and…

the Magpul SGA adjustable stock (12.3-14.5 LOP) - https://www.budsgunshop.com/product...+black+synthetic+for+moss+500+590+590a1+12+ga

The Magpul has multiple LOP adjustments but sort of a hybrid shape to the pistol grip area. Also has separately available cheek risers if needed. More expensive.

The Hogue gets the LOP into a more comfortable range for defensive use and is cheaper. The buttstock and grip area preserves the traditional OEM stock shape.
I believe I could still use my Limbsaver pad— maybe. Much less expensive.

If I’m smart, I’ll wait on my shotgun instructor’s recommendation. Hmm … I’m not very patient. ;)

I have the 12" LOP Hogue overmolded stock on my SBS. It's quite comfortable as far as length of pull goes - but, I tend to punch myself in the nose with my thumb. I've got a cheapo gel-filled slip-on recoil pad on top of it now, extends the LOP to about 12.75", which is perfect for me.
