Hey yall. Had my 870 screw up on me the other day and I am in need of another HD shottie. I've got a Mossberg Mariner, but I carry it as my truck gun. I want another Mossberg, and am eyeing the Maverick brand (by Mossberg). What I'm wanting to know is the Mav 88 as good a shotgun as the reg. Mossberg 500? Please realize this shotgun WILL NOT be used for hunting, ever. If the quality is on par with a regular 500A, I'll be happy with it. Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

It should be pretty much the same, though the safety is on the trigger guard with the Maverick instead of on the tang as with the 500. Only problem might be the lack of an easy clean-out magazine tube, but if will spend its life indoors that shouldn't be a problem. Just work a lot on loading it under pressure, and don't ever put a shell in it backwards.

What happened to your 870?

I'm easing up on the 2000 trouble free round mark with my maverick 88 security (20" and 7+1). Mine is very plain jane with only a butt cuff and a hi-viz sight...not very "tacti-cool". This is a great $200 shotgun!

Well....I've taken it to my gunsmith twice for jamming. Basically what happens is the shell lifter does not lift the shell high enough so the bolt can push it into the chamber. As a result, the edge of the shell (sometimes the side, top, and bottom) comes in contact with the edge of the chamber, locked up the action. To allow the shell to go in, I have to bring the slide back a little and bring it forward again. At first I thought I was short stroking, but now it does this all the damn time. I have *never* had this happen with my M500. And just the other night, the ejector spring broke. This is what makes sure the spent shell ejects properly and far nough of the the chamber.

Well, my gunsmith called Remington in reference to the warranty and replacing the part. Come to find out the ejector spring housing it press riveted into the receiver. Remington advised they did not provide warranty on firearms 20 years or older (mines 22) and that if I wanted it replaced, they would have to comepletely reblue the receiver, because the machine that removes the ES housing would damage the finish on removal. And this procedure would cost me $150 bucks (according to Remington). Yeah, its FUBAR. Well, the gunsmith, with my permission, went ahead and removed the remaining ejector spring by breaking it off. As a result, my 870 will now function, but I still have the jamming problem and the shells barely eject far enough to clear the action. Anyways.....lol.

The Maverick 88 Security was the first and only 12ga. I own. Its never missed a beat and even feeds the mini shels reliably.

The Maverick will do its part when you do yours...

I have used my Maverick 88 for everything from "woods-n-water" hunting work to HomeLand Security. Right now, it is set up with the 18-1/2" cylinder-bored barrel, stoked w/#4Buck & slugs in the butt-cuff.

I love my Mav 88... I've got the 28" barrel, and haven't removed the mag plug yet, so it only holds 2+1, but I've still put about 200 slugs through it at the range. It's built very well, and anything that bolts on to the Mossy 500 can bolt onto the Maverick. The only non-interchangeable part is the trigger group, everything else is swappable.

I'd say it sounds like you (or maybe your gunsmith) need to replace the carrier dog follower spring, or maybe just a good cleaning might help. Try pulling out the trigger plate assembly as per the field stripping instructions in the owners manual. Soak it in kerosene outside the house, or in a solution of Simple Green in hot water inside. Once it soaks for a while, rinse it thoroughly with more hot water, shake it out, then blow it out with compressed air.

Note- never take the safety off or pull the trigger when you have the trigger plate assy out of the gun.

Since Simple Green is a degreaser, you will need to relubricate the trigger plate. A light oil like RemOil, or whatever lube you prefer, should be used at all points of friction and brushed on lightly with a soft clean brush (I use a small paintbrush) to protect metal parts from corrosion.

As to the ejector, that's true in a 12 ga. 870. The rivets have to be drilled out and replaced to replace the ejector. And the receiver will need to be refinished. Mechanical stuff breaks or wears from time to time, even in 870s. But it's fixable. Find yourself a 'smith who knows 870s- shouldn't cost as much as a new gun would to get yours back up and running for another 20 years. The carrier dog follower spring is only $4.60 at Brownells... http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=10771&title=CARRIER DOG FOLLOWER SPRING

The maverick was my first shotgun and I killed my first deer with it. It's very durable and reliable. My only gripe was the safety was very hard to push through on mine.

I have 800 rounds through my Mav 88 and it shoots like she were still new (I use it to shoot trap).

-Cheers

Already changed that spring out Lee....first thing I did after it was mentioned to me on here like 6 months back....it didn't help. The gun is pretty damn clean also....I'm anal about my guns being clean.
