My take on this is simple. He and McCarthy are against legal guns. The guns that would be allowed on Amtrak would be legal and checked, just like the ones on airlines. In opposing this, Bloomberg proves beyone all doubt that he is against legal guns as well as illegal guns. Mayors that have joined his organization because they have been led to believe that it is only against illegal guns should take note and they should be held responsible if they do not withdraw.

Mayor Bloomberg rips Congress for plan to let guns on Amtrak

Mayor Bloomberg went underground Sunday to blow the whistle on the Senate's bid to allow guns on Amtrak trains.

The mayor blasted lawmakers for voting to strip $1.6 billion in funding from Amtrak unless it tosses a rule against guns in luggage put in place after the 2004 Madrid train bombings.

"This has nothing to do with the right to bear arms, and everything to do with keeping our country safe from terrorists," Bloomberg said at Penn Station.

"The legislation allowing guns on Amtrak was passed because of ideological politics - not public safety." Bloomberg was joined by mayors from cities in the region, as well as Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Nassau), who entered politics after her husband was murdered by a mad gunman who shot 25 people, killing six, on a Long Island Rail Road train in 1993.

"This shows that the [National Rifle Association] has too much influence over Congress," McCarthy said.

He had credibility? When was this?
He does with some. Not with us. Unfortunately, his stance will not blow his credibility where he had it. It will only further hurt it where he didn't.

Forming a coalition against illegal guns is bullcrap. There is already a coalition for that, its called everyone but the criminals. We don't want criminals carrying stolen guns/illegally purchased guns either, only we want to punish the criminal and not the instrument. The Mayor is against guns period, its no secret to us.

I think it's hilarious that they're making such a big deal out of this. Last time I took an Amtrak I carried my 1911 IWB. And yet they're talking about all the extra security measures that will be needed to bring them up to airline-level security. As if criminals can't just bring their guns onboard right now...

"This shows that the [National Rifle Association] has too much influence over Congress," McCarthy said.

Gee...

I thought her own party, the Democrats, controled Congress... I supposed gun control advocates should now join us in kicking them out of office...

Darn NRA! :scrutiny:

No kidding. I ride the Amtrak on a fairly regular basis and there is zero security. No screening whatsoever. It is no different than hopping aboard a city bus.

He is not really against guns. He is just against our guns. He doesn't mind controlling the largest police force in the nation, and being followed by a dozen armed guards everywhere he goes.

But heaven forbid the peasants and serfs have a gun for self defense. Typical "anti's" are not really anti. They actually love guns, and want them all for themselves.

As a Jewish man who should still have vivid memories of stories he must have heard from his family in his youth, I will never understand how Mayor Bloomberg could ever be as anti gun as he is.

My good friend's grandfather stated to him when he was reliving the horrors of Germany in which he lived pre WW11, "it could never happen in my Germany". The man barely escaped the gas chamber.

How fast we forget or just choose not to believe or remember.

I am not professing that the U.S.A. will ever become a Germany but I am saying that once knocked down, you should get up willing and ready to fight. The Second Amendment is a good weapon to start and stay with.

Right after they said:
2004 Madrid train bombings.

Come to think of it, has their ever been a "terrorist" attack perpetrated with small arms?

He had credibility? When was this?

He was elected by a majority of people in the largest city in the nation and essentially the "capital of the world"

You may not like Bloomberg, or people like him, and neither do I, but to paint people like that as incompetent is to undermine our cause as a whole. Like it or not, this very anti-gun man has a lot of clout. He talks and millions listen.

Well said.

The Mumbai attacks were.

But besides, instead of blaming Bloomberg for exploiting the terrorist fearmongering we should blame the conservative politicians who wrote the book on it and vote THEM out of office too.

Hell, I don't ride often, but last time I took an Amtrak train I went Berlin CT>NewHaven CT>Boston>Portland Maine...

And closest to security I saw were some armed cops in Boston North Station yakking at eachother...

My luggage never got anywhere NEAR inspected....so...yea...clearly....they're working SO hard to keep guns off trains,

I have only 3 wrods to decribe Mayor "Lil Mikey Bloom(ing idiot)berg"

Liar
Cheat
Fraud

I actually like Mayor Bloomberg. He's a very competent Mayor who runs an efficient police force and, unlike his predecessors, actually cleaned up the school system. NYC is a very safe place (the murder rate is way down) and cleaner than I ever remember it. He's a self made man from humble beginnings, was not always surrounded by armed guards and courtiers and is a human, likable fellow. He says what he means and he does what he says. Of course I completely disagree with is stance on guns and have written him several times to tell him so. But to dismiss him as an anti-gun nut is to underestimate this man's potential. He has been consistent in his stance against guns and is a formidable adversary.

If I was a New Yorker and had to cast a vote on the upcoming election I'd look at his record as a whole and probably vote for him. You can't always get the perfect candidate that agrees with you on every issue. You have to look at their views as a whole and vote for the person who'll overall improve your quality of life. But with regards to NYC's gun laws, which are draconian and unfair, I think the most effective way to address that issue would be through the courts. Let's hope the NRA files suit to make gun ownership easier in NYC. There's no way you'll be able to do it through Gracie Mansion.
