went to the rang with out 150 rounds of old surplus 30-06 rounds for my springfield 03, half of them would go off.
how bad is it to keep a shell that has already been hit with the firing pin but didnt discharge? i kind like going through them all just to work on controle. i noticed with the first one or two that i was flinching and as the seasion went by it was good to know i was able to work on form and trigger pull with out know it was a dud and with out mashing my shoulder too bad.
are they bad to keep around? i think they are bad primers. it makes a solid mark on the primer but thats it. i know it is a dumb question i should probably give them to the F.D. but if there is a chance i could pull the rounds and save the brass that would be nice.maybe even put the round without powder back in the case and keep them in the box just for drills like you would a snap cap. idiot question of the day

I made up a few "dummy rounds" for the various calibers I shoot. Brass with primer missing, no powder, bullet painted black.

I keep them all in a box marked "dummy rounds", which is stored in a separate location from live ammo.

While this arrangement is not a snap cap, it does all the other jobs a dummy round is supposed to do, such as checking OAL for magazine feed, practicing magazine swaps, unloading to show clear, etc.

Whatever you do to mark them, it should be permanent and distinct. Some drill a hole through the case to help make the difference obvious to anyone...

i was planing to but while at the range i wanted to mix them in so i wouldnt know what was live and what wasnt just so i could work on the flinching part of it. is it dangerous to"unload" a dud shell or should i just drop them off?

I'd just pull the bullets and use the brass for reloads. I'd likely run the empty cases back through the rifle to re-hit the primers, though.

With careful pressure, pushing out a live primer is no big deal. The operative word is "careful".

If you don't disassemble the ammo, at least render it inert by drilling a hole through both sides of the middle of the brass and dump out the powder.

well just that may pop may not it is anoying to go through over 100 rounds and have 43 duds. i still havent gon through all the surplus stuff i have i bet most of it is junk. i have two bolts for me 03a3. used them both and it doesnt matter if the bolt is stock or aftermarket.
