Man shot dead at Cross Keys

Victim kills attacker during robbery attempt in quiet North Baltimore shopping center

By Julie Bykowicz

March 17, 2006, 9:52 PM EST

A man who was attacked by would-be robbers at the upscale Village of Cross Keys shopping center in North Baltimore Friday afternoon grabbed his own gun and fatally shot one of the assailants in a parking lot, city police said.

Investigators believe that the man who opened fire just before 2 p.m. might have been on his way to a bank when he was attacked by three men who jumped out of a white car in front of a Williams-Sonoma store.

During the brawl, the man who had been attacked was able to pull away to retrieve a handgun concealed inside his Honda Accord, and then he fatally shot one of the attackers, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman.

Bullets shattered windows of his car. The other two assailants hopped back inside their car and sped off with a fourth man driving, Moses said.

The four men did not appear to be armed, police said.

Police did not release the name of the man who was attacked. But several employees at the center and a high-ranking police official with knowledge of the investigation described him as a gas station owner in his 50s who regularly makes deposits at the Columbia Bank and who might have been targeted.

The shooting victim, whom police had not identified Friday night, was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Moses said.

Within 30 minutes of the shooting, Moses said, police had found the white vehicle used by the attackers, abandoned at Cold Spring Lane and Greenspring Avenue. The men were being sought Friday night.

Moses said the man who was attacked had a permit for the gun and would probably not face criminal charges. The city state's attorney's office reviews fatal shootings.

Shoppers who pulled into Cross Keys Friday saw something they are wholly unaccustomed to: police cars and yellow crime scene tape blocking part of the parking lot. A police helicopter hovered overhead for part of the afternoon.

The attack took place at a plaza filled with women's clothing stores such as Ann Taylor and Talbots and in a parking lot usually filled with luxury vehicles.

Cross Keys -- in the 5100 block of Falls Road, parallel to Roland Park -- includes about 30 stores, a Radisson Hotel, and beauty salons and spas such as Elizabeth Arden's Red Door. High-end condominums and townhouses and business and professional office buildings are included in the 73-acre community.

Store employees and customers said they couldn't recall anything like Friday's attack ever happening, and police said there have been no reported robberies or attempted robberies there in recent months.

Michelle J. Schiffer, vice president and general manager of Cross Keys, said two teams of security guards patrol the grounds. There is security for the shops and security for the gatehouse and roads.

"This is a wonderful gated community," she said, adding that she could not release any details about what happened Friday.

Store employees said they did not hear gunshots but saw several customers rush inside when the shooting began.

"People ran inside and told us they heard gunshots," said Tara Williams, a sales associate at Ann Taylor for more than two years.

She and other employees said they were in disbelief.

"This is completely out of the norm," she said. "Nothing like this has ever happened here before. It's really shocking to see."

"It was so scary," said Rani Hyun, manager of Cross Keys Cleaners. "It's such a quiet place -- so much security."

Most stores remained open Friday evening, although employees noted that business was slower than usual. Williams and other employees worried that news of the attack would, at least temporarily, affect business.

"There's a strong possibility this could scare customers," she said.

Two women shopping together who didn't want to give their names said they would think twice before coming back.

But other shoppers said they were unfazed.

"Shootings happen everywhere," said Brenda Jones of Pikesville, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins University.

Jones and her mother were relaxing in the tidy courtyard "enjoying the ambience," she said.

Patty Satisky, a Baltimore County resident who said she has frequented the Cross Keys area for 40 years, said the crime wouldn't keep her from coming for her regular hair appointments at Carl's Beauty Salon.

"I don't think there's any place that's completely safe," she said.

This is a wonderful gated community...
Which leads to the conclusion that 4 of your wonderful neighbors did the robbing. Unless the gates are just for show, and do not actually screen the visitors. :neener:

I wonder how the police are going to write it up or will it "slip" through the cracks,Ooops, I mean GAPS in their crime reporting and statistics!

Considering that this happened here in Maryland maybe the states atty' will want to crucify the victim for violating the criminals rights!

This could only happen here:

"Moses said the man who was attacked had a permit for the gun and would probably not face criminal charges. The city state's attorney's office reviews fatal shootings."

Two women shopping together who didn't want to give their names said they would think twice before coming back.

Well gee, the guy should have just left the criminals to shoot these women.

I didn't just say that, did I?

Moses said the man who was attacked had a permit for the gun and would probably not face criminal charges.

You know, those fortunate few who successfully wrangle a permit to carry from the tight grasp of the MD State Police can still be charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon. The permit requires the applicant provide proof of need. Once approved, the permit is only good while engaging in those enumerated activites. You say you need it for cash deposits - its only valid when traveling to and from the act of making the cash deposit.

MD's Attorney General Joseph Curran is notoriously anti-gun. Anyone here remember the 70 some page document he published around 2000 entitled, "A Farewell to Arms"?

Roeland Park is the place Baltimore's elite can live to claim they're still a part of Baltimore and city life from behind their gates and private security force, but criticize everyone of lesser financial status who flee for the northern MD and PA suburbs seeking a better place to raise a family. 20 bucks says Ron Smith highlights this story on WBAL when he returns from vacation Monday and he and Frank D Filippo get into it, Frank being a Democrat, a resident of the area, and ardent defender of its safety.

For all MD residents interested in forwarding CCW reform in this state, you need to make another round of calls and emails to the members of the House JUD committee as shown here.

Call Vallario's office at (410) 841-3488 and request that he push ahead on a vote on the bills as listed at the above URL

He is very lucky that he was someone that could justify the need for a CCW. If I'm not mistaken they are very hard to come by in Maryland. Had he been a normal citizen who said he wanted the CCW "just for self defense" without a specific need he would probably be dead right now.

I love when I hear a victim kills his assailant story but it is even that much sweeter whan it happens in the most anti-gun areas of the nation.

I had high hopes for this article when it started out saying
Victim kills attacker during robbery attempt
so I was very dissapointed when I read
The shooting victim, whom police had not identified Friday night, was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Moses said.
are they ever going to get it right?

Which no doubt explains why criminals look for victims there.
As the newspaper story says, crime is very rare in that neighborhood; this incident is the first in several years. Although it appears theses 4 criminals did target this biz owner when they knew he was dropping off cash receipts at the bank, in general criminals have not been looking for victims there, weather it is a “gated” community or not.

Unless the gates are just for show, and do not actually screen the visitors.
I have not seen them screen visitors for at least 12 years (at least not during the day.) They used to have a guard at the gate, I think to close it if they get a report of a crime being committed, but I have not even seen that for 5 years or so. The do have security guards patrol the grounds, and they video license plates of car going in and out.

Not trying to start an argument, but I think what ever make this neighborhood safe is not strongly related to the fence and gates.

On another matter, the newspaper story says:
The four men did not appear to be armed, police said.
And
During the brawl, the man who had been attacked was able to pull away to retrieve a handgun concealed inside his Honda Accord, and then he fatally shot one of the attackers…
I think this is why charges against the robbery attempt victim/shooter might be considered. I understand a justifiable shooting in MD requires you to be in fear for your life, and shooting is your only way out. Not enough info in the story to know if this is the case or not.

I am continually baffled by states like CA and MD that will generally only issue a CCW permit if you carry large amounts of cash, but not to protect your only life that you take with you everywhere you go ...

OTOH, the laws of those and most other states generally do not allow you to shoot to defend only property, such as someone stealing your car from your driveway or your TV from your living room.

How can this paradox be justified...? Are persons who are rich enough to carry large amounts of cash somehow super-citizens with special rights that the rest of us schmucks don't have

I was channel surfing the Saturday morning news, and caught this story on two Baltimore stations.

Channel 11 blared, "Man takes laws into his own hands, kills robber...." with little or no story, just the headline.

Channel 13 ran the story, without the drama, and pointed out that the robbery victim had a permit to carry concealed, that the police would not be pressing charges, and was basically a citizen acting in self defense, bummer for the bad guy.

I like Channel 13 news better.

Why didn't he just call 911 on his cell phone and wait for the police?

Note to those with low IQ: I am being facetious.

On the local news at 11:00 on channel 11 a reporter said that the dead perp was 22 and another one picked up at a local hospital was 29. The others are still on the loose.

It was mentioned again that the victim had a CCW license. Nothing was said if police or states atty' plan on charging the victim with any offense.

Back when I was a float teller and account manager for Columbia Bank I would often work at the branch there. I probably know this guy, at least I probably know his face.

As for it being a gated community, Cross Keys is gated and within those gates are townhouses, condos, offices and an upscale shopping center. During the day the gates are up so the public can access the offices and the shopping center. Security is at the gatehouse and the area is well patrolled by security guards. I'm pretty sure that the gates are closed except for residents and approved guests at night.

This area is pretty close to the Baltimore Orthodox Jewish community. It is very upscale, but like the Jewish community it is only a mile or two from some pretty shady parts of Baltimore. Go figure, the criminals are getting smart that it is an easy 5 min bus ride or 20 min walk to greener pastures for their activities. If it wasn't for this armed citizen Cross Keys would probably be looking at more of the same just like the Jewish community has seen lately. Since the first such attempt reached this end maybe it will be spared that fate.

Now I wonder if "momma" will throw a civil suit on the shooter because "my boy was a good boy, and once he cleans himself up from the crack, he was going to be a doctor!":barf:

bumm said:
I'd say the place is safer now than it was before the guy shot the dirtbag.
I'd have to agree!

Of course the Baltimore Sun printed the CCW holder's name and address

Given the recent history of revenge killings in Baltimore, I wonder how long it will be before A) His house is burned B) His family is attacked C) There are protests from "concerned citizens" in front of his home D) The CCW holder packs up and puts his house on the market. :fire:

Well

Saw the listing of the address and thought the same thing - the need to know basis has limits and I don't see the purpose (positive) of including that. With that being said, WBAL has become my new favorite Baltimore news station - their coverage at least recoginzes who the real victim was in this encounter.

Of course the Baltimore Sun printed the CCW holder's name and address

Was this a part of an article describing the robbery incident, or is this something the Sun did earlier -- printing the names and addresses of all CCW permit holders? In either case, this smacks of something that needs a well-written LTE of the Sun.

I saw this story reported on the local Fox evening news. This particular station (don't remember whether it's DC or Baltimore) is absolute crap when it comes to reporting news IMO. But this time they did a pretty good job. They simply stated that a man was ambushed by 4 attackers, and he defended himself with a handgun that he had a permit to carry. They even quoted a witness' opinion that the handgun "probably saved his life." I was more than a little pleasantly surprised by the tone of the report.

An update on this from WBAL.

Cross Keys Robbery Victim Identified
Sunday, March 19, 2006
WBAL Radio

The owner of at least one gasoline station has now been identified as the man who turned the tables on a gang of violent bandits Friday in a parking lot at the Village of Cross Keys.

Police confirm that Mark Beckwith of Bel Air was the man being beaten as he left his car, apparently on his way to a Columbia Bank branch in the Cross Keys shopping center off Falls Road in north Baltimore Friday afternoon.

Beckwith was able to get back to his sedan and get his handgun, which he fired. One of the attackers soon died at Sinai Hospital, while another one was wounded in the hand. That man, 29-year-old Corey Mcleaurin, was treated at two hospitals and has been charged by police in connection with the attack on Beckwith, who is 57.

Authorities say that Beckwith has a permit to legally carry a handgun. While the specific reason he was issued such a permit has not yet been released, in Maryland concealed carry permits are given to persons who carry quantities of cash or valuables or who have reason to believe they may be under threat. One police spokesman Friday said that persons "in the public eye" may be issued concealed carry permits.

The man who died at the hospital has been identified as 22-year-old Keith Love of Yale Avenue in Baltimore.

Two other men involved in the attack, including a getaway car driver, are still being sought by police. The car was found soon after the incident, abandoned at Cold Spring Lane and Greenspring Avenue.

The exact location of Beckwith's gasoline station or stations remained unconfirmed early Sunday morning. A Baltimore Sun article in 1997 said that Beckwith quit a banking job to join partners in running a gas station in Timonium, and the newspaper story said that he also owned stations in East Baltimore at the time. Some neighborhood residents said that Beckwith owns one of the gasoline stations at Cold Spring Lane and Falls Road, but that information has not been confirmed. The intersection is a few blocks from the entrances to the Village of Cross Keys, an upscale and gated community not far from Roland Park and Hampden.

No charges have been field against Beckwith.

"Gated community." In other words, white. Or at least rich.

The two moronic women who will think twice about coming back, well, where else will they go? Is there someplace safer than the white... er, gated community?

The man needs to carry the gun and not leave it in his car.

Agreed, the dead man is a criminal not a victim. Ayoob is right when he advises that one tell arriving officers at the shooting scene "I am the victim, and that guy on the ground with my bullet in him is the perpetrator."
