I saw one of these in my local store today and looked them up on the internet.

Interesting little deal. Lets you replace the slide on your 1911 with a carbine rifle upper using either the original .45 ACP or several other calibers up to and including .460 Rowland (basically a magnum .45 ACP with similar muzzle velocities as .44 magnum using bullets of similar weights).

My local guys tag says $225 including the "muzzle device" but I could probably get it for a few bucks less.

Anyone have one of these or have any personal experience with them? Spare me all the "if you want a rifle then get a rifle" stuff. If you can't have fun with this stuff then what's the point in shooting?

Are they accurate? How's recoil? Jam-o-matic or super ammo digester? What's the deal?

I know a guy that has one - he's pleased with it. No reported reliability issues with it....

I have the Mech Tech unit and I have it on a Kimber Poly Custom 14+1, and have had it on my Kimber TLE 11 .Both guns shoot never had a problem using the Mech Tech.I have added a forward grip + laser the total length about 33 1/2 inches makes it easy to shoot from the hip.Add a red dot or scope great HD gun.

I think it would be cool to have one for the G20, especially if you have some of the 29rd mags for it :)

Are they really only $225? I thought they were more expensive than that.

Just checked Brownells, apparently they only have the one for the 10mm 1911 left :(

Brownell's and Wilson Combat have both discontinued carrying the CCU's, but did have them in the low $200's during close-out. The only mail-order place I know of at this time is www.deltaforce.com. $339.95 for 1911, $359.95 for Glock.

I traded a Mini-14 for the CCU and some cash in 2001 at the Birmingham Gun Show.

Here's mine:

It's pretty hapnin. I use mine with a SA GI 1911. Promag is coming out with a 40 round 1911 drum magazine. If that drum is reliable, it's going to be awesome for use in these things.

Are they accurate?
It's been a while since I benched mine, but I seem to recall something like 2 - 3" groups at 50 yards. I think that's pretty decent.

How's recoil?
There is none! It's pretty heavy and you're firing a pistol cartridge. The stock (or maybe the recoil spring) does make a weird tuning fork kind of sound, though. You get used to it.

Jam-o-matic or super ammo digester?
No jams except with really, really crappy magazines. I'd expect the CCU to feed at least as well and probably better than your 1911 does with a given magazine.

What's the deal?
Go for it! They're really cool. I got mine chambered in .460 Rowland. Thus far I've only shot .45 out of it, but I still intend to buy some .460 Rowland brass to try. Should be fun.

I recall reading about these in a gun publication a while back. The authors said that they had been told that because of its construction, it really liked the hotter rounds.
I'd take one on a G20 frame with some nice hot stuff from DoubleTap.
Too bad they don't make it for 7.62x25. :(

HELP

I would like to change the original stock with the skeleton.

Any ideas how this would work?

"I would like to change the original stock with the skeleton."

This will take a lot of metal working:
1. You will need to cut the original stock off (it's wealded on)
2. You will have to make and weld an adapter to fit the replacement stock.

Had one, it shot fine, but I just couldn't decide on a use for it. My only complaint was that the .45 frame just doens't feel right, pulled up to the cheek-weld. My trigger finger was into the guard up to the second knuckle.

Ditched it. Put the Sistema back together. Never know when you might need that 5th .45 auto.

Got mine on a SA Mil Spec

It's a lot of fun to shoot and pretty accurate, if you remember you're shooting a pistol cartridge.

I still have the skeleton stock on mine with a little scope and it makes a weird "spang" kind of noise with each shot that you feel as much as hear.

They were selling a poly insert for the skeleton stock to damp the vibration, but anyone with a basic woodworking shop could make an insert and screw two halves of a stock insert together without much trouble to achieve the same result.

I just got used to the feel and left it alone.

It's a fun toy for shooting at indoor ranges in the winter and a nice plinker outside when the weather permits.

Can I see a picture close up of the attached stock?
Or do you mean you have the origional bent metal frame stock?

(1) is correct. When I put the M4 stock on mine, I made a sleeve that slid over the receiver tube and swaged it down to fit the M4 stock, then screwed it all together. But I work in an mfg plant and have acess to all kinds of gadgets. I did consider welding, but went with hex head screws instead for a better look.

Speedweapon, looks as if some sort of bracket could be made to fit that stock. Someone local should be able to do it cheaply.

Is this tecnically a rifle. As i live in jersey for me to own a handgun i have to be 21 but if it were in this configuration it would be a rifle right? Kina like me getting an AR pistol and converting it to a rifle right? or a mac 10 and putting a 16 inch barrel and a stock on it?

of course if i could own it i would have my uncle (over 21) buy the pistol and convert it for me.

It is a conversion to make a rifle from a pistol. You have to have a lower frame from a handgun. It isn't classified as a firearm (except in CA, the only state I know of where it is illegal). You don't have to have a special license to order it. It is classified as a "gun part". It is useless without a pistol lower, however.

Mech-tech reliabilty

Have had mine for 3 years. It is the 45 ACP model. I use is in close-range 3-gun matches with good success.
It prefers FMJ, is fun to shoot, accurate, but it is a 50 yard gun.

Got my digital camera back. Here is the pic of mine. BSA red dot, Mechtech sight rail, tritium Ar15 sight, SA frame, ext mag release, mag funnel, M4 stock, vertical grip, dual Surefire 6P's. probably some other extra's I can't think of right now.
