Bull shot, killed by police after downtown escape

December 24, 2004

Fishers -- Fishers police on Tuesday were forced to shoot a bull that had gotten loose in the downtown area when it was being transferred from a hauling trailer to Archer's Meat Market.

Five officers, the animal's owner and employees of Archer's tried for one hour -- from 9 to 10 p.m. -- without success to get the bull back into its trailer, said Gerry Hepp, Fishers police public information officer.

Officers chased the bull to the northeast corner of 116th Street and Lantern Road behind the A&W/KFC restaurant. Sgt. Randy McFarland, a sniper on the Fishers Police Department Emergency Response Team, ultimately shot the animal once with a .223-caliber tactical rifle.

It's not the first time livestock has been loose in the downtown area.

• Last December, an 1,100-pound steer escaped while being unloaded at Archer's Meat Market and wandered the center of town for about 30 minutes.

The animal was brought down by two shots from a .223-caliber rifle.

• In February 2001, a 1,200-pound bovine got loose.

Archer's, which has been in business since 1976, predates much of the development that surrounds it. It is able to operate as a butchering site at that location because it was grandfathered in under zoning regulations.

Anyone want to bet what the rifle (probably AR) would have been called if it were in the hands of a mere "civilian"? "Rampaging gun nut uses assault weapon to kill peaceful cow" :D .

Lazy and otherwise uninformed (and time rushed) reporter simply writing down what the police told him/her. Figures no one will notice and will be in the bottom of the bird cage by tomorrow. Can't be held accountable or accused of bias because they are simply reporting what the police said.

But your point is well taken.

You are right.

It is official double speak so as to appear "politically correct." Kind of like police using "sharpshooters" not "snipers."

Most reporters only have a degree in journalism and thus are exceptionally well-qualified to communicate only their actual lack of useful knowledge.

I'm not necessarily in favor of injecting editorials into news broadcasts; but just once I'd like to see an anchor stop reading the prompter and say "Wait a minute. This is drivel!"

huge bovine have been slaughtered for years, with .22 rimfire revolvers...

i've also experienced "peaceful cows" more than once... :what:

How can the cops tell...

...the diference between the bovines that apparently need shooting and the lard arse old babes that normally lumber around in most any town? Or is that why the law took an hour to do the job? They wanted to make sure of their target.
