Hey everyone -

I'm tumbling .45 ACP prior to depriming. I'm using a fairly fine media... it came with my Lyman tumbler. I'll be picking up some larger corncob this week but I have a question.

When I check the brass before bagging it, I notice that better than half have got a single piece of media in the flash hole from the INSIDE - that is to say against the inside of the primer.

Just for fun, I checked to see if it would deprime from using the sizing/decapper die and it did... just wanting to make sure I'm not screwing anything up using this method.

Anyone?

Thanks,
Andy

It comes right out with the primer, good to go. I tumble my fired brass, then size/decapp. Prime. Reload. No PP cleaning. The decapper makes sure the flash holes are clear.:)

Read a thread somewhere the other day about a nearly disasterous hang fire that was possibly attributed to a plugged flash hole . The gun went off over 2 minutes after the hammer had been dropped on the round. One of the guys who posted a reply to the thread who shoots extreme amounts of his own handgun reloads gave a new twist on this stating he deprimes in a seperate operation which is not totally uncommon,,, but when he removes them from the decapping die he peers through the flash hole and places them rim side "up" in his loading blocks rather than down. He does this for a quick second review of the cases before reloading. I guess he saw a guy nearly blow his foot off with a slow to detonate hangfire . Waiting the recommended 1 minute doesnt cut it guys, be careful :what:

No piece of corncob in a flash hole caused a hangfire. The primer blast would blow the little tiny nothing of a piece of corncob out of the flash hole and ignite the powder just fine.

Why are you going to go to a coarser media?

I switched to a finner media 20/40 size available from Graingers for $25 for 40 lb bag. No more media in the flash holes, no more media in the primer pockets, plus it polishes just like the "std." size like comes from Lyman.

I'm with Walkalong on this.

I simply cannot believe a single grain of either corncob, or walnut media would stand the chance of a fart in a hurricane of stopping up a flash hole when the primer detonated.

We are talking about some pretty serious heat & pressure there folks!

We know a primer can move a heavy & tight fitting bullet out of a case and lodge it in the bore. That much power confined inside the primer pocket by a speck of media and somethings gotta get out of the way!

And it won't be the primer or the primer pocket I betcha!
