I am having a time with trying to keep my Walnut media out of my flash holes. I clean before depriming. So far I have been getting it out by tapping the case on the bench or using a fish hook that I bent out straight to remove the stuck media. Will it hurt to deprime with the media in the flash hole or do I need to keep picking it out? I didn't know if it would hurt my depriming pin or not

The pin will just knock it out.

Walnut is a lot softer than the metal of a primer.

I tumble with corncob, not walnut... but I did one time have a rather large piece of cob stuck in the flash hole. I didn't see it before I started loading the case up. I wish I had, as it bent the decapping pin on the end of the rod.

you can find certain types of walnut shell that are finer grit than what is usually marketed to reloaders. it's marketed more towards media blasters, but it will work in a tumbler. it won't get stuck in the flash hole.

but to answer your question, no, it shouldn't damage the depriming pin.

I tumble my brass and then deprime as part of the reloading process on my RL 550B. Been doing it that way since I started reloading 25 years ago and have never had a problem.

Lizard Liter from you local pet store will make all your problems go away.

Well it will at least make that problem go away.

Pushing out a hunk of media that vibrated into place takes less force than it does to force out a pressed in primer.

Thats what I have been using. I have read that many people use it since its cheaper than the stuff sold for reloading. Its not very big hunks, just big enough to stick in the flash hole. I didn't think it would hurt my de priming pin, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

I tumble before depriming too if the brass is dirty. There's a small pile of corncob media at the bottom of the press from where I deprimed them. I've never had an issue.

Just use a small scribe to push it out, Harbor Freight has a set for a couple of bucks.

I make sure the flash hole is clear before priming, but I don't give it a second thought after the first tubling prior to resizing.

I deprime with a universal die, then tumble with Lizard Litter & Flitz long enough to get the grime off.
It does a great job of cleaning the primer pockets.

Anything in the flash hole will get poked out when I run them through the expanding/depriming die.

I tumble my brass and then resize. Depriming pin will push out and piece of cleaning media that may be in the flash hole.

Tumble, then deprime. Depriming before tumbling just leads to headaches and it serves no purpose as the primer pocket will not get any cleaner.

I lube, then resize/deprime. Easiest way I know to get case lube off the cases. When I take the case out of the media, I orient a handful base up where I can see the flashholes then use a drywall screw to poke out the media.
The last bag of media I bought is very fine so I don't find a lot of media in the flasholes lately.

I only tumbled deprimed brass one time, a very long time ago. Now I tumble before I do anything. Once they are loaded up, I tumble them 50 rounds at a time for 10 minutes. Makes them super shiny and slick. And before this turns into a TUMBLE LIVE ROUNDS?!?! argument thread, I've chrono'd both tumbled and untumbled live rounds on the same day. Both came out with the same velocities. So if I have the time, I tumble the finished product.

I do tumble before de-prime and resize. I think I will try blowing out each case while inspecting them. This would blow out any dust. I have a 30 gal compressor.

I believe one reason some deprime first is so that there is less lead styphanate(sp) deposited in the media and thus floating around in the dust. Perhaps a healthier alternative in the long run.

You guys that tumble then resize, how do you get the case lube off your cases after you resize?

Pistol brass, no problem as I use a dry lube. Rifle brass. I rinse in white gas.

How do I keep media out of my flash hole, simple, I use 20/40 corn cob media from DrillSpot or Graingers, its fine enough that the media problem no longer exsists.

This has been covered over and over and over again and comes up about ever 2 weeks.
