I posted part of this thread (but with more name-calling, hence the edit for THR) on a different forum. Since most of the THR members on here don't go to that site, I felt the urge to post it here as well. It deals with the fact that most gun owners (from my experience on some boards) will believe ANYTHING that the media writes about LE, but will use some common sense when it comes to what the media says about guns. See below for more:

Is it me, or does anyone else see the obvious stupidity that's presented, when someone takes at face value, a story that slams the police. Of course, the same people who believe EVERY SINGLE WORD of the anti-cop story, will be the first ones on the bandwagon when something blatantly anti-gun is printed.

Come on, people...if the paper can't be bothered enough to do some very basic research on guns, before they run a story, what makes you think the story will be accurate when it involves LE? After all, the liberals hate BOTH guns AND law enforcement. Why in the heck would they bother to include facts with the stories on either subject?

I also posted this, in the same thread:

Oh, and I forgot one other thing that's another favorite of mine:

The "eyewitnesses" that the news uses. In one particular news story recently, two people were featured on the front page of this particular section. These two individuals were complaining about how "unfair" the dress code at a certain location (search for "dress code" for more info), and how they'd been denied entry.

Well, let me tell ya something about these "wronged" individuals. One was a frequent flyer to our fine facility (hehe), and the other was a convicted domestic violence offender (among other things), and at the time of the photo, had an active warrant on him. I found out about the warrant about a week after the pic, when I saw him in jail. Laughed about it quite a bit, too.

The same thing has happened many times when there is any kind of controversial LE activity, be it a shooting, pursuit, etc. I've seen numerous people on the TV talking about crap, when I've seen them in jail more than once.

And yes, before anyone asks, if you get locked up on a regular basis, your opinion means less than nothing to me.

So, without trying to start a flame war, I'd like to know WHY people do this. And we all know it happens. Just check the thread that DMF started. People are talking about things they "read in the paper" or "saw on TV", wihtout knowing any of the people involved, what actually happened (as opposed to what some dubious "witness" said, and most of the time, without actually even residing in the town that this took place in.

As any officer knows, there are generally 3 sides to a story: One person's side, the other person's side, and the truth. Now, without being able to speak with all parties involved in the situation, and knowing the FACTS (please note the difference between "facts" and whatever the news reports, please) of a situation, how can you make an informed judgement on it?

Do people on this board (as well as others) actually think that the news would report something that made LE work look good? If ya do, then I've got a bridge for sale....

Ahh...thanks for the name-calling.

So refreshing to see people address the issues...

Just so you know, the original title of the thread on the other board was "
SOme people are so stupid, it's amazing they haven't forgotten to breathe." Thought you might wanna know that.

Now, if you'd like to compare news stories, I'd be more than happy to do just that. I've got two pending cases in my area alone that would fill up a couple of pages on here. One involves an officer who used the least amount of force necessary to subdue a subject who was a known fighter, and that had just kicked him in the groin. Another covers the story of a cop who has been indicted for murder, because he shot an armed suspect, after the suspect attempted to take the officer's gun.

In the latter case, the media constantly refers to the suspect as a "teenager". While this is technically true (him being 19), it's putting a large spin on the shooting. This happens all the time with the media. They invented "spin". Does anyone here argue the fact that the media is liberally biased? Well, lemme tell ya, libs hate the police even more than the people on this board do.

Another case:
Officer is attacked by handcuffed man wielding boxcutter in living room of apartment. Officer puts 11 rounds in cracked-out (honestly was on cracked, and was a frequent visitor here at jail) subject, and kills him. Protests soon ensue, and the media put such a spin on the story that I got dizzy from reading it. Apparently, people watched "Wonder Woman" too much growing up, and believe that handcuffs are magical devices that instantly stop ANY type of aggressive behavior. Yeah, OK.

So, I've given three incidents that recieved literally hundreds of pages and hours of airtime that put officers in a bad light. You listed 3 happy crappy, touchy feely articles. We've had those types here lately, as well. It's mainly because the media falls head over heels in love with the mayor and his appointed chief of police. I keep wanting to know if the news media actually sleeps with the city leaders here, or if they just want to.

The media's "job" as many of them see it, is to make stories that are sensational and emotional. You sell more papers and dish soap ads that way. Can you imagine how few people would watch the news or read the paper if everything was "just the facts?"

Certainly not saying it's right, just the way it is unfortunately.

Anymore, I don't open many LE threads. The ones I do, I just replace "LEO" with "gunowner".

Like this:

Only an idiot would believe that "the media" is allied in some conspiracy to make gunowners look bad.

(Add any three stories about Olympic shooting events here.)

See the media does publish positive gun stories. As for all the negative stories, it's not the media's fault that some gunowners behave questionably.

See? What's sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander.

LawDog

I have to add that I don't open those LEO threads any longer either (cept this one) cause they are like quicksand, you can't get out of them. I just stick to gun and gun stuff and avoid the legal stuff.
